SALISBURY — There was a time when Johnny and Brenda Morgan had difficulty making ends meet. Caveats in legislation, however, meant they also couldn’t access food stamps.

Now, Johnny is executive director of Grateful Heart Community Service, a faith-based nonprofit group that works with Second Harvest Food Bank of Charlotte and Feeding America.

On July 27, the group will hold its annual Community Day, when food, cosmetics, clothing, hygiene, back-to-school supplies and other items will be available to the public.

“We’re just trying to give back to the community because God has blessed us,” Johnny Morgan said.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., families can come to Grateful Heart Community Services at 704 Dunns Mountain Road to receive help.

An information tent and five or six supply tents will be provided. After families fill out some paperwork, they can go to different tents to receive items.

Although families must be below a certain income level to get food assistance, they can receive other items at no cost.

There will also be free hot dogs, chips and water for families who attend.

Grateful Heart Community Service sponsors Community Day once a year, but it is hoping to make it twice a year, Morgan said. The group also has a food mission and clothing assistance year-round, in addition to providing transitional housing for homeless men.

About 50 volunteers will help put at Community Day. The giveaways usually go pretty fast, said Morgan. He expects that about 200 to 250 families will turn out.
