Local golf update: Owen takes Warrior Club Championship; Lyerly finishes strong in major event in N.Y.

Chris Owen shot 72-70 — 142 to win the Warrior Club Championship held on Saturday and Sunday.

Owen finished four shots ahead of Richard Cobb (72-74 — 146).

Also competing in the Championship Flight were William Little (148), Joey Boley (158), Dalton Little (167) and Troy Hammond (171).

Jim Christy shot 74-71 — 145 to win the Senior Championship Flight. He finished four shots ahead of Gary Hancock (79-70 — 149).

Scott Fagg (154) won the First Flight. Mike Keffer (162) won the Second Flight, while Neal McElveen (175) took the Third Flight. David Creswell (172) won the Senior First Flight.

In the Porter Cup in Niagara Falls, N.Y., Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) shot 74-74-65-67 — 280.

Lyerly was 8-under in the last two rounds to finish even par. He tied for 17th, 10 shots off the pace.

Grace Yatawara (Salisbury, East Carolina) is playing in the Ladies National Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Golf Club of Tennessee. That tournament starts on Monday.

Yatawara tees off at 12:30 p.m.

Yatawara recently was named an All-American Scholar by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association.

Yatawara’s ECU teammate Carly Cox (China Grove) was named an All-American Scholar for the third time in her career and was on the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll  six times.  .

Cox closed out her collegiate career participating in 11 events and posting a team third-best 74.45 stroke average. She stands eighth on ECU’s all-time career stroke average chart (75.21). She graduated in May with a degree in communications.

The 50th Dogwood State Junior Boys Championship starts on Tuesday.

The field includes local golfers Charlie Barr and Austin Miller.
