Area Sports: Rowan Football Jamboree will be at North

The Rowan County Football Jamboree will be held at North Rowan on Friday, Aug. 16.

Fans can see all six Rowan teams in action in one place.Admission is $6 for four scrimmages.

Carson and West Stanly scrimmage at 6 p.m. East Rowan scrimmages West Iredell at 7 p.m.

The 8 p.m. matchup is Salisbury vs. West Rowan. North Rowan takes on South Rowan at 9 p.m.

The first Jamboree was held at West Rowan last summer and was successful.   

Local golf

Grace Yatawara (Salisbury, East Carolina) shot 4-over 75 on Monday in the first round of the Ladies National Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Golf Club of Tennessee.

Yatawara made three birdies. She’s tied for 37th.

Yatawara recently was named an All-American Scholar by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association.

Yatawara’s ECU teammate Carly Cox (China Grove) was named an All-American Scholar for the third time in her career and was on the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll  six times.

Cox closed out her collegiate career participating in 11 events and posting a team third-best 74.45 stroke average. She stands eighth on ECU’s all-time career stroke average chart (75.21). She graduated in May with a degree in communications.

Chris Owen shot 72-70 — 142 to win the Warrior Club Championship held on Saturday and Sunday.

Owen finished four shots ahead of Richard Cobb (72-74 — 146).

Also competing in the Championship Flight were William Little (148), Joey Boley (158), Dalton Little (167) and Troy Hammond (171).

Jim Christy shot 74-71 — 145 to win the Senior Championship Flight. He finished four shots ahead of Gary Hancock (79-70 — 149).

Scott Fagg (154) won the First Flight. Mike Keffer (162) won the Second Flight, while Neal McElveen (175) took the Third Flight. David Creswell (172) won the Senior First Flight.

In the Porter Cup in Niagara Falls, N.Y., Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) shot 74-74-65-67 — 280.

Lyerly was 8-under in the last two rounds to finish even par. He tied for 17th, 10 shots off the pace.

The 50th Dogwood State Junior Boys Championship starts today.

The field includes local golfers Charlie Barr and Austin Miller.

The McCanless Couples enjoyed the weather on Sunday.

The first-place team of Debby Pierce, Dan Ingleston and Ann & Linus Holstein edged the team of Walt Kincaid, Harry Owen and Pam & Ralph Carver on a scorecard playoff.

Ralph Carver had  longest putt,  Mary Seaford had closest to the pin.

Youth track and field

Salisbury Speedsters athlete   Darion Drye Jr. took first place in the discus for 13-year-old boys in the AAU Junior Olympics in Greensboro.

Drye had a winning throw of 154 feet. He finished fourth last year.

Summer baseball

Maddux Holshouser (Carson, UNC Greensboro) pitched six strong innings  as the Statesville Owls won on Sunday against Lenoir in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League playoffs.

Holshouser struck out nine and allowed one run and two hits.

Catcher Lyle Pfingst (Catawba) is now playing  in the Valley League with the New Market Rebels.

Legion baseball

Jake Wolf pitched a three-hitter as Fuquay-Varina beat Randolph County 3-0 in a state tournament semifinal in Cherryville on Monday.

Wilmington held off Cherryville 14-12 in the late semifinal on Monday..

Wilmington scored eight runs in the first inning and led 10-0 at one point.

Cherryville scored seven runs in the seventh.

Catawba’s Robbie Cowie hit a home run for Cherryville.

Intimidators

GREENSBORO— Alex Destino hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and Jason Bilous allowed just two hits over six innings as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 4-0 on Monday.

The home run by Destino scored Andrew Vaughn to give the Intimidators a 2-0 lead.

The Intimidators later tacked on two runs in the sixth when Destino and Amado Nunez hit solo home runs to secure the victory.

Bilous (4-6) struck out five and walked two to get the win.

Noe Toribio (0-1) went six innings, allowing four runs and four hits in the South Atlantic League game. He also struck out three and walked two.

The Grasshoppers were held off the scoreboard for the seventh time this season, while the Intimidators’ staff recorded their seventh shutout of the year.

Despite the loss, Greensboro is 8-3 against Kannapolis this season.

  

Legion softball

Iredell won against Rowan 3-1 on Sunday with Whitley Arnott (West Rowan) closing out the game in the circle for Iredell.

Brooke Lowery (South Rowan, Catawba) had the only hit for Rowan.

Rowan lost 13-3 to Union County on Monday in the first round of the playoffs.

Andrea Furr hit a two-run homer for Rowan.

Mackenzie Sprinkle had  a double and singled in front of Furr’s homer.

Mac Misenheimer stole two bases and scored a run in the first inning.

Union advanced to an  area semifinal game tonight at Davidson County.

Iredell County won 7-4 against Forsyth County on  Monday in a first-round game and will play at top-seeded Kannapolis tonight at 7 p.m. at Kannapolis Middle School.

Jr. Legion softball

Rowan is hosting the state tournament at Erwin Middle School and East Rowan High this weekend.

Rowan plays South Gaston in a 4 p.m. game at Erwin on Friday.

Timber sports

Matt Slingerland of Rockwell finished third overall in the lumberjack (axing and sawing) national championships held in Wisconsin.

Knights

NORFOLK, Va. — Alcides Escobar drove in Danny Mendick with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, leading the Charlotte Knights to a 6-5 win over the Norfolk Tides on Monday.

Mendick scored on the play after he led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a ground out by Daniel Palka.

Austin Wynns hit a two-run single in the first inning to help give the Tides a 4-0 lead.

The Knights came back to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning when Palka hit a solo home run.

Norfolk tied the game 5-5 in the sixth when Ryan Mountcastle hit an RBI single, driving in DJ Stewart.

Zach Thompson (5-1) got the win in relief while Tanner Scott (3-3) took the loss in the International League game.

In the losing effort, Norfolk got contributions throughout its order, as five players had at least two hits.
