Livingstone men’s basketball team rallied from a 16-point second-half deficit to defeat St. Paul’s 74-71 on Monday evening at Trent Gym.
Jarred Stockton led the Blue Bears with 19 points. Aaron Caruthers scored 18 points, while Greg Henry added 15.
The Blue Bears trailed by 16 points with under 15 minutes left in the game, but a 14-2 run lifted Livingstone back into it.
Caruthers hit a jumper to give the Blue Bears a 72-71 lead.
After St. Paul’s missed, Stockton hit two free throws to seal the victory.
Livingstone is on the road at Bowie State on Nov. 28.
– Caruthers honored
Livingstone senior guard Aaron Caruthers was named CIAA Newcomer of the Week.
Caruthers, a native of Georgia, averaged 17.3 points per game last week in three contests and also pulled down nine rebounds. Caruthers’ top performance came against Catawba on November 15 when he tallied 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
– LC women lose in OT
Livingstone women’s basketball team overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to force the game into overtime, but the Blue Bears finally fell to St. Paul’s 89-86 on Monday at Trent Gym.
Senior guard Kayler McBride led the Blue Bears with 21 points. Junior guard Montiya Harrison added 16 points, sophomore forwards Cassaundra Rhodes and Shaquetta Brooks added 14 points each.
With 3:38 left in regulation, the Blue Bears trailed by nine points, but McBride sparked a rally.
Livingstone shot 37.7 percent from the field and was outrebounded 52-44.
Livingstone returns to the floor Wednesday at home against Catawba.
– Davie splits in hoops
Janna Dixon scored 16 points and Tia Clement had 14 as Davie’s girls (2-0) rolled over West Iredell 63-37 on Monday.
* Davie’s boys fell to the Warriors 58-52.
Michael Key had 13 points for the War Eagles. Shannon Dillard and Jamal Mayfield canned 11 apiece.
Zach Fallrod scored 20 points to lead West Iredell. Keith Gray had 18.
– Middle school hoops
North Rowan Middle opened with a 59-27 victory against Knox.
Michael Bowman scored 14 points to lead the Mavericks. Mike Connor (12 points), Mike Bost (seven) and Kasaun Coney (six) also had good nights.
Phillip Thompson scored seven points for the Trojans. Bobby Propst had six.
* North Middle rolled to a 66-45 decision against China Grove on Monday.
Connor led the way with 13 points. Bost had 12, Coney 10 and Bowman 9. Cameron Sifford added seven points for the Mavericks. Tyler Mulkey scored six.
Shaun Spry paced the Red Devils with 21 points. Eric Goldston scored 10.
* Knox’s girls rolled over Corriher-Lipe 49-16.
Kacie Stamey had 15 points for the Yellow Jackets.
* Erwin’s girls defeated nonconference foe South Davidson 45-29 at Erwin on Monday.
It was the 16th straight regular-season victory in two seasons for the Eagles (3-0), who held a 22-4 halftime lead.
Kendall Brown led Erwin with 15 points. Karleigh Wike had a triple-double with 11 points, 15 rebounds and 13 blocked shots. Josie McNeely had eight points and eight rebounds. Lauren Thomas had eight points and six steals.
South Davidson (2-1) was led by Haleigh Hatfield with 12 points. Katelyn Shelton and Gentry Grubb added eight and seven points, respectively.
* South Davidson’s boys (3-0) turned back Erwin 64-47 behind the scoring of the Hatfield twins. Austin Hatfield led the way with 21 points, while brother Taylor scored 20. Chase Smith added 11 for the winners.
Erwin (0-3) was led by Donte Means, Doc Corpening and Calvin Edwards with 10 points apiece.
Means had five steals and four assists. Corpening grabbed eight boards. Michael Caldwell added seven points, and Derrick Blackwell had five points and eight steals.
– Salisbury fan buses
Salisbury High is planning to charter two buses ó a student bus and an adult bus ó for the trip to Canton Pisgah for Friday’s third-round football game provided there is enough interest.
The cost is $30 per person and includes transportation and admission. Buses will leave the SHS gym parking lot at 2:45 p.m.
Reservations, including payment, may be made during the school day today or between 8-10 a.m on Wednesday in the main office of SHS.

Davie softball standout Morgan Wyatt has signed with Western Carolina.
* North Davidson pitcher Kelly Secrest has signed with UNC Wilmington’s baseball program.
* Matt Griffin, a class act who has piloted Lexington’s American Legion program the last nine years, has stepped down.
– Fields honored
Catawba’s Rob Fields has been named the SAC men’s basketball Player of the Week.
Fields, a senior guard from Orangeburg, S.C., scored 20 or more points in three of the first four games as Catawba posted a 3-1 record. He was named MVP of the season-opening Highway 52 Shootout, then was key in the come-from-behind win over Pfeiffer.
In the Highway 52 Shootout, Fields scored 21 points against Livingstone and followed that with 23 points against Cheyney.
– West winter baseball
West Rowan Winter Baseball Camp will be held on Saturday, Dec. 19, from 10-2 at the West field.
The camp is for ages 8-13.
Pre-registration cost is $25.
Walkups the day of the camp will be accepted for $35.

– USA baseball academy
East Rowan High is the host for a six-week Spring Training baseball program for players in grades 1-12 from Jan. 10-Feb. 14.
East head coach Brian Hightower will direct the program in conjunction with U.S. Baseball Academy.
Hightower said last week that 70 players had already signed up.
Sessions are offered in advanced hitting, pitching and catching at a cost as low as $99 for six weeks.

– South Y basketball
South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations through Dec. 5 for its boys basketball league.
The program is for boys in grades 3-8. There will be three age divisions ó 3rd-4th, 5th-6th and 7th-8th. Practice starts the week of Dec. 14 and games begin Saturday, Jan. 2.
The cost is $36 for members and $60 for non-members.
* South YMCA also is accepting registrations through Dec. 5 for the Little Shooters program, a basketball program for boys and girls in grades 1-2.

– Bench press tournament
Rowan YMCA is having a bench press tournament on Saturday, Dec. 12.
Registration and weigh-in are from 8:30-10:30 a.m., with competition starting at 11.
There are six age classes, with weight categories in each, including a female division.
The entry fee is $25 per class per person. Crossover is permitted with a $20 fee for the second class.

The Campbell Scholarship is awarded each year to a Salisbury High senior.
