Salisbury’s girls tennis team opened the season on Wednesday with a 6-0 victory against East Rowan.

Doubles were canceled because of a storm.

Salisbury’s Lillie Rusher won 6-0, 6-1 against Audrey Ward. Meredith Burton won 6-0, 6-0 against Sarah Margaret Dyer. Margaret Thurman won 6-0, 6-1 and Syann Cooper. Abby Campion won 6-0, 6-2 against Jaysa Causby. Sophie Chmiel won 6-1, 6-0 against Madison Brown. Kate Burton won 6-0, 6-0 against Caroline Burleyson.

American Legion

Randolph County slugger/pitcher Trevor Marsh was named the national player of the year on Wednesday.

Marsh was all-tournament in the Legion World Series.

The UNC Wilmington freshman received the  George W. Rulon Player of the Year Award that is based on integrity, mental attitude, cooperation, citizenship, sportsmanship, scholastic aptitude and general good conduct, as well as baseball.

Along with the award comes a trip to Cooperstown, N.Y., next year for the MLB Hall of Fame ceremonies.

Marsh batted .386 with 11 doubles, six triples, 10 home runs, 38 RBIs and 56 runs scored. He was 7-1 pitching with a 1.33 ERA.

Idaho Falls, Idaho, won the American Legion World Series on Wednesday, beating Fargo, N.D., 5-3 in the championship game.

Idaho went 5-0 in the World Series hosted by Shelby.

Wednesday’s game was a completion of Tuesday’s contest that was suspended by weather.

Idaho (61-6) had reached the World Series championship game in 1926 and 2001. but had finished as runner-up.

North Dakota finished 54-8.

HS soccer

Goalkeeper Parker Anderson, Cam Phillips and Dalton Baxter stood out for South Rowan in Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to South Iredell.

HS baseball

Carson senior pitcher/infielder Chase Drinkard announced a commitment to Southeastern Community College in Whiteville.

HS volleyball

Freshman Leah Hinceman had eight kills in East Rowan’s sweep of Concord on Tuesday.

Zoe Larson had 27 assists. Emma Collins had six kills for the Mustangs.

Jayvee football

The Salisbury-North Rowan jayvee game has been postponed. The schools are working on a makeup date.
