SALISBURY — In response to potentially dangerous conditions because of Hurricane Dorian, which has prompted evacuations for coastal North Carolina and South Carolina residents, a local automotive dealer is asking for assistance for employees of its Swansboro location.
Team Chevrolet is collecting food, toiletries, bottled water and other items for employees at the Swansboro dealership who have begun to evacuate the coastal town. Evacuations have been ordered for parts of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
The storm is expected to affect eastern North Carolina later this week with heavy rain, wind and possible flooding, forecasters say.
The employees at the Swansboro dealership have yet to rebuild from last year, when the town was pounded by Hurricane Florence, said Seana Corsale, business development manager for Team Chevrolet.
“They are picking up everything. A lot of them lost homes last year, and some are still living in travel trailers. We have given them trucks to bring travel trailers here,” Corsale said.
The Salisbury dealership began collecting a few items Tuesday, but it hopes the community can help as the Swansboro employees relocate to this area. Anyone who makes a donation will receive a free carwash from the Salisbury dealership.
Corsale said businesses can also make contributions such as providing water or hot meals. The Hampton Inn hotel in Salisbury has given the dealership a number of toiletries.
The dealership is accepting donations during business hours. The business is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. It is closed on Sunday.
Corsale said the Swansboro dealership has been placing sandbags at the business and relocating as many vehicles indoors as possible as well as putting hurricane shutters in place.
Once the Swansboro employees arrive here, some by travel trailers, they will stay with local employees. The company is paying to board the employees’ dogs in Mount Ulla.
