Each year, the South Rowan Choral Department presents a Broadway-style musical show, complete with singing, dancing, acting, and costuming. This year’s fall show is a tribute to Hollywood, called “Lights, Camera, Action” and will be filled with favorite movie tunes, past and present. This show will be presented Saturday at 7 p.m. in the South Rowan HIgh School auditorium.
The six musical ensembles of the South Chorus will combine for an opening number and closing finale, singing “At the Beginning” from Anastasia and “This is It” from Bugs Bunny. Each ensemble will then share its selections from various movies.
Varsity Singers will dramatize “The Wizard of Oz,” featuring Lindsay King as Glinda, the good witch, Taylor Draper as Dorothy, Jacob Jester as the scarecrow, Adam Corriher as the tin man, and James Horne as the lion. They will also present a medley from “West Side Story” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, “When I Fall in Love” from Sleepless in Seattle, and “Operator” from the movie, “Phone Booth”. Kayla Noblitt will be a soloist in “Operator”.
The Chorus 2 Ensemble will sing and dance to “Seize the Day” from Newsies, a medley from “Forrest Gump,” “Let’s Go to the Movies” from Annie, and a medley from the traditional Disney classic tunes.
Chorus 1 will entertain with “Under the Sea” from Little Mermaid, ‘There You’ll Be” from Pearl Harbor, “Footloose” and “The Lion King.” The Mixed Show Choir will sing and dance to “Won’t You Charleston With Me?” from “The Boyfriend” and “I Go to the Rock” from the “Preacher’s Wife” movie. Soloists will be Finesse Parks, Kayla Noblitt, Taylor Draper and Isaiah Cornelius. The Women’s Show Choir will present “Let’s Hear it For the Boy” from Footloose, and “Breakaway” from the Princess Diaries.
A separate Men’s Ensemble will sing the sixties favorite, “My Girl,” and a Girl’s Ensemble will sing an acappella ballad, “Somewhere Out There.” The students taking chorus for Honors Chorus credit will perform an acappella version of “Moon River” from one of the early movies, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Other specialty numbers will include duets from “Dreamgirls” by Isaiah Cornelius and Ariel Lawson and one by Melquan Thomas and Kierra Harden. After the finale, all former choir members are asked to join the choir for the choral benediction, ‘The Lord Bless You and Keep You.”
This will be a full evening of entertainment similar to a Broadway show, complete with an intermission. Cost will be $5 at the door. The South Varsity Singers will be returning to New York’s Carnegie Hall in March to sing in the National Youth Choir. Monies are now being raised to help students in this trip opportunity.
