West Rowan’s boys soccer team beat Mount Pleasant 4-0 on Wednesday in a non-conference match.

It was the first win of the season for the Falcons (1-5).

Jonathan Alvarez, Luis Vasquez, Brian Gutierrez and Aleksis Suarez scored goals for West.

Michael Leon and Suarez had assists.

Chris Mercado made four saves for the shutout.

West Rowan’s jayvees won 1-0 against Mount Pleasant on Wednesday.

Mitchell Reyna scored the goal.  Daniel Ortega had the assist.

Luis Cruz and Jacob Joseph shared the shutout.

Salisbury (4-2, 3-1) rallied more than once and won a wild whirlwind of a soccer match 6-4 over Central Davidson on Wednesday.

“I’ve been a part of nearly two decades of soccer at SHS and I have never experienced one quite like this,”  Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.

Salisbury jumped out to a quick lead, only to be caught and surpassed by Central Davidson, which held leads of 3-2 and 4-3 during the course of the see-saw match.

“Central has a ton of speed in midfield and up top and capitalized on multiple mental mistakes from our guys to push us to the limit,” Parrish said. “The match taught me a lot about our team. First and foremost, I learned that we still have a ton of work to do to get where we need to be to be consistently successful. However, it also showed me that we have a lot of tenacity and will battle for a full 80 minutes.  It was the first time we overcame a deficit and were able to prevail in the end.”

Salisbury got three goals from Joshua Portillo  and one each from Irvin Almaraz, Christopher Portillo, and Juan Salazar.

Assists were credited to Almaraz, Joshua Portillo, Hugo Trujillo, Brody Dillon, and Will Webb.

Next up for the Hornets is a non-conference match tonight at Ludwig Stadium against   perennial contender  CATA.

Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

South Rowan’s boys soccer team prevailed 9-1 against East Rowan on Tuesday in a non-conference match.

Eber Tapia scored twice for South. The Raiders got one goal each from Zander Efird, Logan Carter, Dalton Baxter, Cameron Phillips, Carson Withers, Harrison Ward and Tony  Zempoaltecatl.

Scoring for the Mustangs (1-6) was Elijah Luna.

South Rowan (5-4, 1-3) fell to Oak Grove 3-0 on Wednesday in a Central Carolina Conference match.

  

HS cross country

In the Printcrafters Invitational at Statesville’s McAnderson Park on Tuesday, West Rowan’s boys finished third behind Mooresville and Lake Norman.

Damian Ackman ran 18:17 and finished ninth to lead West.

West’s Issac Castro was 12th.

Zac Barbee was fifth in 17:33 and led Carson to fifth place.

East’s Thomas Ferguson was 17th in 18:58 and led the Mustangs to seventh place.

A.L. Brown finished eighth. Northwest Cabarrus was fourth.

Carson’s girls placed second behind Lake Norman.

Carson’s Taylor Conrad was fifth in 21:28. East Rowan’s Adalie Harrison was 11th in 21:58.

Megyn Spicer was 21st and led West Rowan.

North Iredell’s Jonna Strange won in 18:34.

In cross country at Central Davidson on Tuesday, South Rowan’s Noah Julian won the boys race in 17:50.

South’s Ian Waugh took third place in 18:46.

South runners  placed 1-3-6-8-9.

Salisbury’s Michael Lowry was seventh.

Salisbury’s Sutton Webb won the girls race in 22:03.

South Rowan’s Bethany Rymer, returning from an injury, was second in 22:46.

South’s Madison McGuire was third in 23:40, while Salisbury’s Leah Cressler was fourth in 24:36.

HS girls tennis

Salisbury’s girls tennis team stayed undefeated with a 9-0 win against Central Davidson in Wednesday’s Central Carolina Conference match.

Lillie Rusher, Meredith Burton, Margaret Thurman, Abby Campion, Sophie Chmiel and Kate Burton rolled in singles for the Hornets (6-0, 4-0).

Thurman/Meredith Burton, Chmiel/Campion and Kate Burton/Abbey Lawson won in doubles.

HS volleyball

Carson swept Central Davidson in Wednesday’s non-conference match 25-17, 25-19 and 25-20.

In East Rowan’s 3-1 loss to West Stanly on Tuesday,   Leah Hinceman had 12 kills and two blocks.  Audrey Cox had 13 digs. Zoe Larson had 34 assists. Riley Hill led in serves received.

HS girls golf

South Iredell shot 121 and won Wednesday’s match at Larkin Golf Club in Statesville.

Medalists were Carson’s Sophia Brown, who is leading the conference, and South Iredell’s Addama Anikwuem with 36s.

East Rowan finished second at 126. Carlee Patterson shot 39, Lexie Miller shot 42, and Victoria Lewis shot 45.

Gabrielle Blabon led West Rowan.

“All the girls played better,” East coach Rhett Teems said. “Short course today, but the consistency is getting there.”

College men’s golf

Junior Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 77-73-72 — 217  and tied for 54th in the Badger Invitational that concluded on Tuesday in Wisconsin.

College volleyball

Lenoir-Rhyne won 30-28, 21-25, 25-17 and 30-28 against Catawba on Tuesday.

Morgan Hester (Carson) had 49 assists and 12 digs for Catawba. Malia Carr had 25 digs. Kylie Morgan had 27 kills.

Braelyn Faust (West Rowan) had three kills for  the Bears.

College soccer

Catawba’s women (2-0) defeated Francis Marion 2-1 on Wednesday.

Callie Hammond and Shelby Vasich scored goals. Shelby Thompson made three saves. Freshman Lejla Mehmedovic (West Rowan) started for the Indians.

  

Sacred Heart 

Sacred Heart’s cross country team ran in a middle school meet in Winston Salem with Summit School, Cornerstone Baptist, St. Pius and Redeemer.

Sacred Heart’s  Gray Goodman and Braulio Mercado finished ninth and 10th out of 35 boys.   

Sacred Heart’s Emma Brown finished sixth, Angie Landaverde finished 7th, and Marion Blake  was eighth out of 48 girls.

Sacred Heart hosted a cross county meet with Erwin,  St. Pius and Blessed Sacrament.

Erwin’s Leah Edwards won in 15:24. Erwin’s Sadie Featherstone ran 15:57 for second. Sacred Heart’s Emma Brown was third in 16:16. Erwin’s team won, with Sacred  Heart second.

Sacred Heart’s Braulio Mercado was third in the boys race in 13:56. Sacred Heart won the team scoring.

Sacred Heart’s girls tennis team defeated South Davie 9-0.  Lauren Childress, Rachel Flynn, Eva Lamanno, Annie Tadiello, Ella Cooler, Emma Rose Dishman and Mayla Brinkley had wins for the Dolphins.

Sacred Heart’s  jayvee soccer team tied Statesville Christian 4-4.

Scoring goals for the Dolphins were Harrison Banish, Kevin Bonilla, Jaime Tavira and Henry Austin.  Leo Mercado and Will Walters played great defense.  Mikko Zaldivar was outstanding in goal.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Les Loman with a net of 61.18.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Jerry Teter with a net of 62.01.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Frank Rowell with a net of 60.44.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Paul Rogers with a net of 57.88.
