KANNAPOLIS — It was supposed to be a toss-up, but Mooresville’s defense and special teams were dominant in a 30-0 non-conference football win over A.L. Brown on the new turf at Memorial Stadium.

Mooresville has won in back-to-back years in the series for the first time since 1964-65.

It was a 7-0 defensive struggle at halftime, but the Blue Devils (2-2), who emphatically ended a two-game losing streak that included an overtime loss to Davie, owned the second half.

Mooresville’s first-half touchdown required only a 4-yard drive and was set up by an interception.

Ashton Michael Edstrom had two rushing scores for the Blue Devils.Hunter Debarardino threw for 119 yards, while Keshaun Black and Ray Watson led a stingy Mooresville defense.

The Wonders (1-1) didn’t run it or throw it efficiently and hurt themselves with penalties. A.L. Brown used both quarterbacks (Isaiah Black and Cam Kromah) but generated just 74 passing yards and had even less success on the ground.

Campbell commit Isaac Riffle gave Mooresville the edge in the kicking game, booting three field goals, pounding punts and routinely kicking off into the end zone after Blue Devil scores.

Mooresville switched from a run-first offense to a pass-heavy effort in the second half and found considerable success.

Jacob Booker made an interception for the Wonders.

The Wonders also were shut out in their second outing last season (24-0 to Marvin Ridge).
