GRANITE QUARRY — Take a look back at the lives of German immigrant Michael Braun and his family, who built the Old Stone House in 1766.

Rowan Museum’s annual Germanfest offers a trip back to those simpler times, when people worked hard but still had time for family and simple pleasures.

There will be cooking demonstrations over an open fire, live music, period dances, basket-weaving and tours of the stone house that was built before the Revolutionary War and painstakingly restored in the 1960s.

Special guests will include craftsman Phil Gilson, a Colonial-style, full-time glassblower from Lawrenceville, Va.; and Shannon Walker, who works at the Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site and specializes in natural medicines and remedies and 18th-century medical interpretation.

In addition, New Sarum Brewing has made its traditional “Braun Bock” for the festival.

The day-long event also features:
Early American children’s games and crafts
Grimm Fairy Tale readings
Period reenactors
Performing (demonstration) artists
Tours of the Old Stone House
German music and folk dance
Locally baked fresh German pastries
Imported German chocolates
Brats and trimmings
Educational displays
