Councilman Anderson dies in Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS ó Richard Anderson, a longtime City Council member and the cityís second mayor, died Monday evening at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast after a brief illness. He was 73.
ěOn behalf of the Kannapolis City Council and city staff, I want to express how truly saddened we are by the loss of Richard Anderson,î Kannapolis Mayor Bob Misenheimer said in a statement issued by the city this morning.
ěHis long track record of public service, his dedication to the citizens of Kannapolis, and his incredible devotion to his family are hallmarks of his rich legacy.
ěRichard worked tirelessly for his constituents, many of whom he worked with at Cannon Mills during his 40-year career there,î Misenheimer continued. ěHe will be missed, and my prayers and those of the rest of City Council and staff are with his family during this very difficult time.î
Anderson was first elected to the council in 1991 and was re-elected to a fourth term in November 2007. Anderson served as mayor from 1993 until 1997. The city was incorporated in 1985.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of Trinity Methodist Church.
