The Livingstone College Music Department will present “The Next Level: Vocal/Piano Masterclass” today from 6:15-8:30 p.m. in Varick Auditorum.
The guest vocal clinician will be vocal/piano coach Arlene Shrut. Livingstone will host seven area college music departments during this free master class under the direction of Shrut.
She is a faculty member of The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. Shrut has collaborated with such artists as Renee Fleming and Thomas Hampson and has recorded on the Dorian, Centaur, Orion, Summit and Albany Records labels.
Shrut often serves as official pianist for many of New York’s top vocal events, and has performed in such venues as Weill (Carnegie) Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, The National Gallery, The Phillips Collection and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. She has toured in Europe and across North America.
She founded the National Association of Accompanists and Coaches, co-founded the Seal Bay Festival in Maine, and authored an entire series of multimedia scripts under the name of Classical Concepts. She formerly served on the faculties of Syracuse University, Mannes College of Music and The Aspen Music School.
Shrut earned two solo piano degrees from the Eastman School of Music and a doctorate in accompanying from the University of Southern California. In 1981, she received a Fulbright grant to Germany in vocal coaching. Shrut lives on the Upper West Side of New York City.
This master class is free and open to the public.
