Area athletes update …

Senior Jayln Cagle was a late signee at Gardner-Webb coming out of high school, but the former A.L. Brown running back has  become the Bulldogs’ most dependable offensive weapon.

Cagle rushed 20 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 24-21 win against Western Carolina on Saturday. He’s rushed for 446 yards this season, with six TDs.

Cagle carried 126 times for 474 yards and scored four TDs as a junior.

He surpassed 1,500 rushing yards for his career on Saturday.

Junior Kortez Weeks (West Rowan) had four catches for 26 yards in Elon’s 26-10 loss to New Hampshire on Saturday.

New Hampshire paid a lot of attention to him. He had 14 catches against New Hampshire in a game last season.

Weeks, who missed the Wake Forest game with an injury, has 21 catches for 245 yards and three touchdowns this season.

He has 117 catches for 1,438 yards for his career.

Jacob Young (North Rowan) stayed busy kicking PATS and was 9-for-9 in Fayetteville State’s 66-20 homecoming win against Chowan on Saturday.

Young also handles punting duties for the Broncos.

Averett’s Jaleel Webster (North Rowan) rushed for 96 yards on only five carries as Averett beat Greensboro 48-0.

Freshman Nautica Patterson (North Rowan) was in on six tackles for Greensboro.

Campbell’s Tywun Rivens (Salisbury) was in on six tackles in a 28-14 win against Presbyterian on Saturday.

Rivens, a junior linebacker, is second on the team this season with 36 tackles.

Campbell freshman back Cameron Davis (North Stanly) rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown in the win vs. PC.

Quarterback Kacey Otto (West Rowan) threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a TD as St. Andrews routed Cincinnati Christian 55-7 on Saturday.

Devin Turner (West Rowan) was in on five stops for the Knights, who won their first game of the season.

Sewanee’s Wesley Porter (East Rowan) was named player of the week by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association for his big game against Birmingham Southern in late September. He had six tackles and two interceptions.

Women’s cross country

Catawba’s Madison Lowery (South Rowan) ran 22:48 on Saturday in Pennsylvania, the second-fastest 6K time in school history and a freshman record for the Indians.

Volleyball

Queens’ Lindsay Elmore (Carson) had 13 kills and 9 blocks in weekend South Atlantic Conference wins against Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman.

Men’s golf

Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 76-68-72 in the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate in Raleigh. He tied for 19th and helped UNC Greensboro finish third.

Women’s golf

Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) shot 77-74-71 (12-over) in the Princess Anne Invitational in Virginia Beach and helped East Carolina finish 11th.

Women’s tennis

Freshman Payton Holt (West Rowan) won at No. 1 singles and was part of a win at No. 1 doubles for Emory & Henry, as the Wasps closed the fall tennis season with a victory against Johnson.
