High school football: Vikings hold off A.L. Brown

KANNAPOLIS — Central Cabarrus’ football team raced to a 28-0 lead over A.L. Brown at Memorial Stadium and held off the Wonders for a 31-27 victory on Friday.
It was the South Piedmont Conference opener for both teams.
Five turnovers proved too much for the Wonders to overcome.
After decades of frustration and 25 consecutive defeats, the Vikings (5-2, 1-0) have won two in a row against the Wonders (4-2, 0-1).
Central led 21-0 after the first quarter. Central standout DeAndre Boykins did most of the damage, rushing for two scores. Dajon Johnson threw a touchdown pass to Arthur Bailey.
Khalil Ford’s 30-yard pick six put the Vikings up 28-0.
Jakhiry Bennett’s 60-yard scoring run put the Wonders on the board and provided some momentum going into halftime.
A.L. Brown rallied in the third quarter, with Cam Kromah throwing TD passes of 30 and 45 yards to Jose Vargas to get the Wonders within 31-21.
Bennett broke his second long scoring — 65 yards — with five minutes left to make it 31-27. The PAT was blocked, leaving the Wonders down four.
A.L. Brown plays at Cox Mill next week, while Central Cabarrus is at home against SPC favorite Northwest Cabarrus.
