High school football: Davie puts up 63 points in CPC opener

MOCKSVILLE — Davie County’s explosive offense welcomed back Tate Carney on Friday and blew out R.J. Reynolds 63-34.
It was the Central Piedmont Conference opener for both teams.
Reynolds answered Davie’s storm of points for a while and trailed 28-21 in the third quarter, but couldn’t keep pace with the high-powered War Eagles. Davie (4-3, 1-0) pulled away with four TDs in the third quarter.
Nate Hampton (236 passing yards), DeVonte Lyerly (156 rushing yards), Carney (142 rushing yards) and Jack Reynolds (90 receiving yards) had productive nights in the destruction of the Demons (3-4, 0-1).
Davie was favored going into the contest, but the magnitude of the victory was unexpected. The Demons held Davie to 10 points and beat the War Eagles in 2018.
Davie never trailed. Hampton threw a pair of TD passes to Reynolds in the first quarter to put the War Eagles ahead.
After Reynolds scored to chop Davie’s lead to 28-21 with 9:34 left in the third quarter, Davie got rapid-fire rushing TDs from Hampton, Lyerly and Carney to break it open.
Davie totaled 584 yards of offense, with a season-high 348 on the ground.
This was the first game that Davie has had Carney and Lyerly operating together. Lyerly emerged as a potential star, while filling in for the injured Carney.
The Demons put up 444 yards themselves, with 250 coming through the air.
Davie travels to West Forsyth next week, while R.J. Reynolds is home against Reagan.
