More than 250 people of all ages took part in the Pregnancy Support Center’s 14th Annual Walk for Life at the Rowan County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
After a breakfast of a variety of biscuits, fresh fruit and pastries donated by local businesses, participants headed to the track to begin the 2-mile event, sharing stories and light conversation as they walked, a Pregnancy Support Center press release said.
“It was an encouraging sight to see over 250 people come out on behalf of the Pregnancy Support Center and taking a stand for the Sanctity of Human Life,” Pregnancy Support Center Board President John McGrail said. “The center will faithfully carry out the calling of its ministry with the continuing support of people like those in attendance today.”
The Walk for Life is one of the year’s most significant fundraisers for the Pregnancy Support Center and is an opportunity for the Christian community to make a positive statement about the sanctity of human life, the press release said.
The Pregnancy Support Center has been in existence for more than 20 years. It offers free pregnancy tests, options counseling, education, referrals including adoption, provision of pregnancy and baby supplies, peer counseling and support, limited ultrasound services and various other services to people with unplanned pregnancies. The center also provides sexual abstinence education presentations to schools and churches.
Although the financial goal was not met, the press release said, this year the walk raised $24,680.16, which will go toward continuing the center’s work.
After the walk, participants enjoyed games and door prize giveaways.
Kristi Greene, executive director of the center, called the event a success and said in the press release that “despite a few rain showers this morning, the spirits of the attendees were not dampened.”
