Area Sports: Salisbury tennis wins in first round of playoffs

Salisbury’s girls tennis squad opened the 2A dual team state playoffs with a 6-0 home victory against Burns on Wednesday.
The Hornets (13-0) swept the singles matches and didn’t have to play doubles.
Lillie Rusher (12-1) won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1. Meredith Burton (12-1) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. Margaret Thurman (12-1) won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3. At No. 4, Abby Campion (11-1) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner. Kate Burton (8-0) didn’t lose a game at No.5, and freshman Abbey Lawson won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
Salisbury will play its second-round match on Oct. 22

Carson tennis (15-0) was postponed on Wednesday and will host Southern Alamance (11-6) today at 3:30 p.m. in a first-round 3A match.

Oak Grove topped Mount Pleasant 8-1 in a 2A first-round matchup played on Wednesday.

HS volleyball
Carson won against Hickory Ridge 22-25, 25-13, 25-22 and 25-17 in a non-conference match on Wednesday.

East Rowan won 25-16, 25-21, 24-26, 19-25 and 15-8 at Central Davidson in a non-conference match played on Wednesday.

Salisbury beat Central Carolina Conference opponent North Davidson Tuesday on the Hornets’ Senior Night — 25-23, 25-22 and 25-21.
Salisbury plays at South Rowan on the Raiders’ Senior Night tonight.
HS boys soccer
West Rowan beat East Rowan 7-1 in North Piedmont Conference soccer on Wednesday.
Joseph Turcios scored two goals for the Falcons, while Louis Vasquez, Jose Mejia, Brian Gutierrez, Michael Leon and Eduardo Vazquez scored one each.
Leon had three assists. Salvador Bautista. Vasquez, Turcios and Aleksis Suarez had one each.
Chris Mercado made six saves for the Falcons.
Mario Lecca scored on a free kick for the Mustangs.

Jaxon Wheeler scored two unassisted goals for Carson in Wednesday’s 7-2 North Piedmont Conference loss to North Iredell.
JV boys soccer
Allen Sanchez and Adrian Delgado scored for Carson in a 3-2 loss to North Iredell on Wednesday.
Sanchez had an assist.
College soccer
Senior Jonathan Quintero scored a pair of goals while junior Caleb Bratager notched a hat trick in Pfeiffer’s 5-0 win against Methodist on Wednesday.
College volleyball
Francis Marion beat Catawba in five sets on Tuesday night at the Smith University Center.
Catawba (4-10) got 15 kills from Kylie Morgan. Jade Brooks added 11 kills with 13 digs.
Morgan Hester (Carson) handed out 45 assists with 25 digs and two aces.
