Thirty students at Salisbury High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their achievement on AP exams.
The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides students with the opportunity to take college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on AP exams.
The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP exams.
One student, Seth Morris, qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP exams taken, and grades 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
Eight students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
These students are Steven Burges, Anthony Girelli, Alexander Hunter, Maxwell Messinger, Seth Morris, Michelle Nguyen, Garrison Stevens, Devereaux Swaim.
Seven students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
These students are Shea Comadoll, Suncica Dragas, Hannah Lebowitz, Kirstin Meyerhoeffen, Remi Moore, Luke Mowery and Catherine Parks.
Fifteen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher: Thomas Coggins, Hunter Fisher, Trevor Gray, Elizabeth Johnson, Parker Johnson, Rachel Kirby, Laurel Loeblein, Wesley McNeely, Hayley Mikkelson, Christina Miller, Madaline Ralston, Alexander Rizeakos, Sarah Shirley, Umber Siddiqui, William Yip.
Of this year’s award recipients at Salisbury High School, eight are sophomores or juniors: Parker Johnson, Wesley McNeely, Madaline Ralston, Sarah Shirley, William Yip, Hannah Lebowitz, Luke Mowery, Catherine Parks. These students have at least one more year in which to complete college-level work and possibly earn a higher level AP Scholar Award.
Burger King Scholars
The HAVE IT YOUR WAY Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to 944 students nationwide as part of the ninth annual Burger King Scholars Program.
Among the winners are 32 students from North Carolina.
Area winners include Justin Holshouser, East Rowan High School; Ashleigh Cline, Concord High School; Meghan Hemingway, Lake Norman High School, Mooresville; Erin Howell, Mooresville High School
“It’s especially gratifying that the Burger King Scholars Program can continue to offer financial support in this challenging economic environment and enable high-achieving, dedicated students to continue their education and pursuit of successful careers,” said foundation Executive Director Ivette Diaz.
Scholarships are intended to help students offset the cost of attending college or a post-secondary vocational-technical school.
Seniors receive $1,000 awards. They are selected based on grade point average, work experience, financial need, extracurricular activities and community service.
