CONCORD — A.L. Brown’s Jakhiry Bennett rushed 28 times for 270 yards  and his eighth touchdown of the season to lead the Wonders to a wild, 29-19 South Piedmont Conference win at Cox Mill.

Bennett is averaging right at 10 yards per carry and surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the season.

He scored a go-ahead touchdown in Friday’s contest from the 5-yard line with 6:04 remaining to turn a 19-16 deficit into a 23-19 A.L. Brown lead.

With Cox Mill (4-4, 1-1) driving at the A.L. Brown 16-yard line and threatening to reclaim the lead, Jacob Booker, a DB who sprints for the Wonders’ track team, intercepted a pass and returned it 90 yards for a victory-clinching touchdown.

For A.L. Brown (5-2, 1-1), it was a must-win on the road, coming on the heels of a five-turnover home loss to Central Cabarrus, and with SPC favorite Northwest Cabarrus (which rallied to beat Central last night) looming as the next opponent.

Todd Kennedy had two scoring runs for A.L. Brown, including a 4-yarder for a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.

It was 10-all at halftime.

Dezmond Adams picked off a pass for A.L. Brown.

Cox Mill’s standout QB Varney Farhnbullah was 20-for-39 passing for 326 yards.

Cox Mill’s next game is at Robinson, which was beaten by previously winless Concord on Friday.
