Area Sports: NCHSAA salutes North’s Wilson, South’s Rymer

North Rowan football’s Malcolm Wilson and South Rowan volleyball’s Kira Rymer were named as the NCHSAA performers of the week.
Rymer has led South to a record-setting season,
The versatile senior had 68 kills, 50 assists, 37 digs, and 10 aces in South’s wins against Mount Pleasant, Central Davidson and Salisbury.
South went 18-0 in the Central Carolina Conference in the regular season.
Wilson, a senior running back, scored a county-record seven touchdowns in three quarters in North’s romp against Chatham Central.
He opened the game with a 95-yard kickoff return and added six rushing touchdowns. He broke the school record for rushing yards, piling up a school-record 318 yards on just 11 carries. He caught a 2-point conversion pass for a 44-point night.
One male and female honoree are named each week in the state.
They all will be honored at a banquet in April.
Schedule changes
The West Wilkes-Salisbury and Concord-Carson second-round dual team tennis playoffs matches were postponed on Tuesday and were rescheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

The Central Carolina Conference cross championships were postponed on Tuesday. The meet was rescheduled for Thursday at Salisbury Community Park, with the varsity boys race set for 4:30 p.m., with the girls race at 5:15 p.m.

Salisbury announced football schedule changes for this week, with heavy rain expected on Friday.
Salisbury will play the jayvee game at East Davidson on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and will play the varsity game at home against the Golden Eagles on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
HS volleyball
Host South Rowan won 25-10, 25-18 and 25-11 against Ledford in a Central Carolina Conference Tournament semifinal on Tuesday.
South (24-1) got 24 digs from Payton Black. Anna Rymer had 13 digs, 18 assists and 10 kills. Kira Rymer had 12 digs, 24 kills and 9 assists. Ashlyn Faw had seven kills and eight digs. Cameron Black had 11 digs.
Central Davidson swept Oak Grove in the other CCC semifinal.
Central Davidson (17-8) plays at South Rowan at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the championship game.

West Rowan (23-0) won 25-19, 26-24 and 25-18 against Carson (19-7) on Tuesday in a North Piedmont Conference Tournament semifinal.
Tori Hester had 18 kills and 12 digs. KK Dowling had 13 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Carly Stiller had six kills and four blocks. Kelcie Love had eight kills. Brooke Kennerly had 24 digs. Ashlee Ennis had 13 digs. Noe Gaeta had 43 assists and 10 digs.
West Rowan will play North Iredell (14-7) in the championship match zt 6 p.m. on Wednesday. North Iredell was a 3-2 winner against South Iredell in a Tuesday semifinal.
HS football
In the new AP media poll, Mallard Creek, Weddington, Shelby and Tarboro are ranked No. 1 in their respective classifications.
No Rowan teams are ranked.
In 3A, unbeaten Northwest Cabarrus is ranked second, while undefeated Statesville is ranked fourth.
West Forsyth, a loser to Davie last week, dropped to ninth in the 4A poll.
HS boys soccer
Carson got goals from Kevin Sotelo, Alavaro Cruz, Isaiah Morriston, Josue Vasquez, Allen Sanchez and Pedro Cruz in a 6-0 win on Monday against East Rowan.
Cruz had two assists in the North Piedmont Conference matchup, while Davin Garcia had one.

It was the second straight NPC win for the Cougars. They won against West Rowan 3-0, with Jaxon Wheeler scoring two goals and Porfirio Rios getting one.
HS volleyball
In Monday’s 3-1 loss to North Iredell in the North Piedmont Conference Tournament, East Rowan got nine kills from Hannah Larson, seven from Leah Hinceman and six from Mikayla Tucker.
College soccer
Catawba forward Shelby Vasich was named the South Atlantic Conference’s offensive player of the week, while Catawba goalkeeper Shelby Thompson was named the league’s defensive player of the week.
Vasich, a senior, scored the game-winning goals against Lenoir-Rhyne and Tusculum.
Thompson, a senior, made nine saves in the 4-3 win against Lenoir-Rhyne and had 11 saves in the 2-0 win against Tusculum.
College football
Florida A&M is the new No. 1 in the HBCU media poll after an overtime win against North Carolina A&T.
Alcorn State, Bethune-Cookman, N.C. A&T and D-II Bowie State round out the top five.
Virginia Union is tied for ninth.

Newberry running back Chance Walker was named the D2Football.com National Offensive Player of the Week.
Walker, a junior from Gaston, S.C., led the Wolves to a 44-21 win over Catawba. He set program records for rushing yards with 261 and rushing touchdowns with six.
College volleyball
Catawba (5-12, 4-10) lost to South Atlantic Conference opponent Queens in three sets on Tuesday.
Claire Kellum led Catawba in kills with 11. Morgan Hester (Carson) led in assists with 21.
Lindsey Elmore (Carson) had eight kills and five blocks for the Royals.
College golf
Catawba finished 17th at the Queens Invitational at the Club at Irish Creek.
Catawba had its best round on Tuesday with a 288 and finished with a 890 total.
Tanner Bibey led Catawba. He came back from an opening 79 to shoot 72 and 70 to card a 221 total.

Catawba’s women finished 11th at the Flagler Fall Slam.
Catawba posted a 626 total for both rounds. Seminole State shot two rounds under 300 to win the team title with a 592 total.
Freshman Alice Sylven led Catawba with rounds of 76 and 77 and finished 21st.
Minor leagues
The new name of the Kannapolis minor league baseball team (formerly the Intimidators) will be revealed at the Gem Theatre on Wednesday night.
The rebranding initiative coincides with the construction of the downtown Kannapolis Sports & Entertainment Venue, scheduled to open prior to the 2020 season.
Mid. school hoops
Erwin’s girls won 46-19 against Southeast in a season opener on Monday.
Hannah Waddell scored 21 for the Eagles. Kady Collins scored 12, and Allie Martin had six.
Erwin hosts North Rowan Middle on Thursday.
Hurley YMCA
The J.F. Hurley YMCA is taking registrations for Little Shooters basketball. Little Shooters is coed and introduces the game to players Pre-K through first grade.
