Area Sports: Carson tennis, West volleyball still undefeated

Carson (17-0) won its second-round match in the 3A dual team tennis state  playoffs on Wednesday.

It’s the first time Carson has won a second-round match.

Maci Cooper won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles against Maya Haynes, 7-5, 4-6, (10-5).

Jadyn Kirkpatrick won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4, and Keeley Watson and Riley Isley rolled at No. 5 and No. 6 to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead after singles.

Cooper and Kirkpatrick, who finished fourth in the individual regional, teamed for a win at No. 2 doubles, while Watson/Isley cruised at No. 3 doubles.

Carson’s Carleigh Perry lost an epic match  to Sophia Petroff at No. 3 singles on a 14-12 third-set tiebreaker.

Lindsey Conrad lost 6-3, 6-1 to Molly Handler at No. 1 singles.

Concord rolled at No. 1 doubles with the strong team of Handler and Haynes.

HS volleyball

West Rowan rallied to beat North Iredell in five sets and took the North Piedmont Conference Tourmament championship on Wednesday.

The Falcons (26-0) won 25-17, 22-25, 19-25, 25-19 and 15-7.

West has won three five-set matches against North Iredell this season.

Tori Hester had 27 kills, 29 digs and four blocks for the Falcons, KK Dowling had 22 kills, 17 digs and four blocks. Carly Stiller had six kills and four blocks. Kelcie Love had five kills and six blocks. Brooke Kennerly had 27 digs. Ashlee Ennis had 10 digs. Noe Gaeta had 59 assists and two blocks.

Madelyn VonCanon had four digs and lots of service points.

HS boys soccer

Eber Tapia scored three goals as South Rowan’s soccer team beat Lexington 6-2 in a Central Carolina Conference matchup.

Cameron Phillips had a goal and two assists for the Raiders (12-9, 8-8).

Carson Withers  Jordi Cortez scored goals. Logan Carter, Nevada Downs, Daniel Trejo and Tony  Tony Zempoaltecatl had assists.

West Rowan lost to North Iredell 1-0 in Wednesday’s North Piedmont Conference matchup despite 12 saves by Chris Mercado.

North Hills

North Hills soccer advanced to the state playoffs.

Alex Earnhardt, Liam Ogg and Owen Teague made all-conference.

Owen Teague was selected for the NCISAA Al-State second team for the second year in a row.

Mid. school hoops

North Rowan’s girls won against Knox 51-17 in a season opener.

Bailee Goodlett scored 16 points. De’mya Phifer had 13, and Brittany Ellis scored 12.

Parks and Rec

  Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department is   accepting registration for its boys youth basketball league for ages 7-15.

Cost is $30 per participant.  Registration runs through Oct. 26 at Hall Gym or online at www.salisburync.gov/play.

SPRD also will offer  Moonlight Basketball for males and females, ages 12-19.

The program is free and will run the first and third Saturdays of the month, starting Nov. 2 through March.  Players must pre-register at www.salisburync.gov/play
