High school soccer: Salisbury edges South Rowan on PKs

LANDIS — Salisbury’s boys soccer team finished in a tie for second place in the Central Carolina Conference by beating South Rowan on PKs on Tuesday.
It was 2-2 at the end of regulation and the overtime periods.
It was South’s Senior Night. It was moved up from Wednesday to Tuesday due to the weather forecast.
Salisbury (15-7, 12-6) had to battle back after the Raiders (13-10, 9-9) took an early lead with two goals in a span of seven minutes.
Nathan Bolinger and Eber Tapia scored. Daniel Trejo and Cameron Phillips had assists.
Joshua Portillo returned from an injury to aid the Hornets’ comeback. He scored both SHS goals, one assisted by his brother, Christopher, and one on a direct free kick from 22 yards out.
Salisbury spot kickers Will Webb, Joshua Portillo, Colin Donaldson, Christopher Portillo and Juan Salazar all converted to give the visitors a 5-4 advantage before the final kicker from South Rowan missed the frame high.
It was an even match. Both teams had chances and runs of play with clear advantage.
Parker Anderson made 11 saves for the Raiders.
Several cards were issued. SHS head coach Matt Parrish was disqualified with two yellow cards midway through the second half.
Thomasville and Salisbury split their regular-season matches. It has not yet been determined whether the teams will play a winner-take-seed match or flip a coin for second place.
With tons of weather and football in the near future, there is still much to be decided.
South Rowan finished sixth in the CCC.
