The Rowan County Animal Control reported positive rabies test results for a skunk found at a Cleveland home.
This is the 13th reported rabies case in Rowan County. Brian Fero discovered a dead skunk in the dog lot with his two dogs. The dogs, a female Rottweiler and a male Beagle, were not current on their vaccinations.
They were held in quarantine pending notification of test results. The skunk was submitted for testing Sept. 5 and results were confirmed Sept. 9 that the skunk tested positive for rabies. The two dogs were euthanized, per the owner’s request.
The agency also reported positive results for a raccoon found near a Gold Hill home. It is the 14th case reported.
Nelly Brown reported a raccoon attacked her cat. The raccoon was killed by a neighbor. The cat was not current on its rabies vaccination and was held in quarantine at the shelter until test results were reported.
The results were returned Sept. 9 and the animal tested positive. The cat was euthanized, per the owner’s request.
On Sept. 15, animal control received positive test results for a raccoon that was found in Richfield.
Maria Fisher reported that while tending to her produce fields in the area Stokes Ferry Road, her dog, Corie, came into contact with a raccoon. The dog, an Australian Shepherd mix was not current on its rabies vaccination.
Corie was held in quarantine at the shelter until notification of test results. The raccoon was submitted for testing. The results came back Sept. 15, which were positive and per the owner’s request, the dog was euthanized.
