Letter: Why the increase in property values this year?

I can’t say I wasn’t warned. Months ago, Rowan County told me I was about to get jacked.
And they actually did it, with a property tax hike 15% higher than last year. County assessors will explain that it’s due to the new valuations in the town of Spencer.
Rowan County increased the valuation of property in Spencer by nearly $18 million, but they won’t tell how the value went up.
Apparently, broken streets and sidewalks, residences in need of repair and an insufficient retail and commercial tax base did not affect their decision to overvalue our town.
So, if you’re like me, bring your tax bills to the next county and town boards for answers.
