Education: Pfeiffer honored as 'Military Friendly School'

Pfeiffer University was recently recognized as one of the most “Military Friendly Schools” by G.I. Jobs Magazine.
The purpose of this annual list is to honor the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that display the qualities of “doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students,” according to the publication.
The list focuses on successful efforts of these institutions to recruit and retain military and veteran students, academic accreditations and overall effort of accommodating these students.
Magazine officials say the list provides a reliable resource for veterans who seek to further enhance their education along with the recent approval of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, according to the magazine’s publisher Rich McCormack.
The bill grants veterans practically unlimited financial means to attend and pay for school.
Pfeiffer aims to assist these veterans through various initiatives. The most effective efforts have been the amendment to its admission process that now waives the application fee for military students and veterans, and a recent agreement with Veteran’s Affairs to offer the Yellow Ribbon Program, which was developed for veterans eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill at the 100 percent benefit level. This program includes those who served a minimum of 36 months on active duty or at least 30 continuous days prior to being discharged due to a service-related injury.
“We want to better assist our veterans and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to help them further their education,” said Steve Cumming, associate vice president for enrollment management at Pfeiffer.
“From experience, we know these changes will provide a better admissions experience for veterans and we hope to see a strong response to these great new well-deserved benefits.”
Provisions of the Yellow Ribbon Program include payments for tuition and fees, housing and a books and supplies stipend. Benefits are payable for training pursued on or after Aug. 1. The tuition and fee benefit is paid directly to the school. Pfeiffer will contribute $2,000 per undergraduate and $4,000 for each veteran in the School of Adult Studies.
