Mt. Tabor UMC
This Sunday, Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church will celebrate its annual homecoming.
The first services of Lebanon Methodist Church were held in a brush arbor located between Ellis Crossroads and Franklin on a tract of land bought for one dollar on Nov. 6, 1847. In 1874, the church was moved to the present location on Old Mocksville Road. It was given the name of Mt. Tabor because of its location on a knoll.
Coming to preach the 11 a.m. service will be the Rev. Jimmie Holland, who served Mt. Tabor from 1988 to 1994. He has retired to his farm in Mocksville with his wife Mary Frances.
During the service, the congregation will celebrate with the dedication of a new sound system and chimes.
The current pastor is the Rev. Dale Bost.
The congregation invites the public to this worship at 4520 Old Mocksville Road and to dinner, which immediately follows the service.
Shady Grove Baptist
MT. ULLA ó Homecoming will be held at Shady Grove Baptist Church, 220 Shady Grove Baptist Church Road, this Sunday at 3 p.m.
The guest speaker will be Rev. R. J. Brown, pastor of New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church in Concord. Lunch will be served at 1:30 p.m.

Calvary Baptist
Calvary Baptist Church will celebrate 138 years at 10:45 a.m. this Sunday.
To help honor the church’s history, the Rev. Milton A. Hollifield Jr., executive director-treasurer of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, will speak. Hollifield is a graduate of Mars Hill College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX.
Preceding his message, the group D.C. and the Chosen Few will provide music for the service. They are a popular local group with connections to the Grand Old Opry and such names as Alabama, George Hamilton IV, and Hank Williams.
Pastor Rick Cockerham invites the community to the celebration and to have lunch in the church fellowship hall immediately following the morning worship service.
Calvary Baptist Church is located on East Ridge Road, just beyond Ellis Crossroads.
Discernment class
John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 1620 Brenner Ave., offers the class “The Way of Discernment” Sundays, 9:30ń 10:15 a.m. in “The Hut” behind the church. The class will be held Sept. 13 through Nov. 22.
The class will be led by the Rev. Doug Gebhard. Participant books cost $10. Childcare will be available.
The 10-week study for small groups is more of a journey in discernment than a how-to guide. This study gently leads to a prayerful path for a richer, wiser life. Part of the “Companions in Christ” series (Upper Room Ministries), The Way of Discernment offers a biblical, theological and practical framework for understanding the practice of discernment.
It provides principles of personal and group discernment, daily exercises to help you move from information to experience, group sharing and worship, penetrating questions to aid the process of discernment.

Coburn Memorial
Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 S. Church St., will celebrate its 119th anniversary with a homecoming worship service at 11 a.m. this Sunday.
The Rev. John R. Cook, formerly of Salisbury, will be the guest speaker. Cook is Presbyterian campus minister of the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He is an Eagle Scout and former member and assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 448 sponsored by Coburn Church.
The Reverends Annalee and Craig Allen, who serve as the pastors of the Downtown Salisbury Cooperative Parish of the United Methodist Church, including Coburn, Park Avenue and Main Street churches, will conduct the worship service.
Attending church as a unit, Boy Scout Troop 448, which had its original charter registration meeting Sept. 13, 1932, will be celebrating its 77th year.
After the service, all are invited to attend a covered dish dinner in the fellowship hall.
St. John’s Lutheran
St. John’s Lutheran Church is offering a class to discover what it means to be a Lutheran believer.
The class, “Inquiring Hearts,” beginning Sept. 13 at 10 a.m., will cover baptism, communion, salvation, the Bible, Luther’s Small Catechism and other church related topics, in five classes, not including Oct. 18.
Sessions are open to anyone who has the desire to know more about the Christian faith, and includes beginners’ questions as well as topics pertinent to lifelong Christians who would appreciate an atmosphere of renewal.
St. John’s Weekday Church School will begin Sept. 16 and will focus on learning about God and Jesus through Bible lessons, music, crafts, games, and service projects. The classes are for preschoolers (ages 3-4) and elementary school students (K-5). Classes begin at 4 p.m. each Wednesday on the St. John’s campus.
A newly-forming adult class, “What is Judaism,” will meet on Wednesdays beginning Sept. 16. This is an opportunity to explore Judaism, Jewish history, the Jewish library, the Jewish calendar, philosophers and mystics and other topics.
The focus will be on the relationship of Judaism to the modern Christian. Instructor Roger Hull will use The Teaching Company materials presented by Professor Isaiah Gafni, the Sol Rosenbloom Professor of Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Following the lecture on CD, time will be given for discussion and questions.

Yadkin Grove Baptist
Yadkin Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 325 Leonard Road, will have its Fall Revival, Wednesday, Sept. 16 through Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. nightly.
Guest preachers include Prophetess Miriam Keller, Pastor Clarence Marlin and Bishop Marvin McMillian. Services will conclude with a special service sponsored by the Pastor’s Aide Ministry at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. Pastor Reginald McConneghay will be the guest preacher.

Salem Lutheran
Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church. 5080 Sherrills Ford Road, will celebrate homecoming this Sunday. The day will be observed as a “Unity Sunday” and there will be no 8:30 a.m. service. A picnic lunch will follow.
The guest preacher for the day is the Rev. Leonard Bolick, bishop of the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
With this homecoming, Sunday Salem celebrates its 159th anniversary. Salem School was operated by the church prior to the coming of public schools in Rowan County.

St. Paul’s Lutheran
On Sept. 13, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will observe its annual homecoming celebration.
Chaplain Craig Honbarger, a son of St. Paul’s, will be the guest speaker. Honbarger is currently serving in the U.S. Army.
There will be a covered dish meal in the picnic shelter following the service.
St. Paul’s celebrated its 179th anniversary in March of this year.

St. Mark’s Lutheran
St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5202 Mooresville Road, will be holding its homecoming service 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20.
A covered dish lunch will follow the service.
St. Mark’s was organized in 1879 with 18 members, originally on Miller Road. The congregation relocated to the present site in 1923. The structure was destroyed by fire in 1954, and rebuilt 1955-56.
Prospect Presbyterian
The public is invited to share in the annual homecoming celebration at Prospect Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Sept. 20,
Sunday School will be held at 10 a.m., followed by worship service at 11 a.m. A nursery will be provided.
The church welcomes the Rev. Clay Macaulay who serves as pastor for Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church, in Weems, Va.
He is one of five children of the Rev. Wilkes D. and Helen A. Macaulay. Wilkes served as pastor for Prospect for nine years from 1957 until 1966. Clay and one of his sisters were born while the Macaulays served at Prospect.
Clay is married to the former Pam Moses of Richmond, and they have two grown children.
He has served pastorates in Virginia, West Virginia and Illinois. He is a graduate of Davidson (AB 1981) and Union Seminary in Richmond (DMin 1985).
Following the service, a picnic dinner will be served in the fellowship hall. Everyone is invited to bring a dish and join in the celebration. Please bring food to the fellowship hall before worship.

Evening praise
CLEVELAND ó On Sept. 13, an evening Praise and Worship service will be held as The Building at 1790 Baker Mill Road in Cleveland at 4 p.m. Minister Tommy Cutherbertsonwill be the speaker for the evening. He is the son of the late William and Doris Cutherbertson. Pastor Ray Blakenship of Anchored in Christ Church of Statesville and his congregation will take part in this service. Ardis Chapel
The pastor and members of Ardis Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church cordially invite the public to their annual Homecoming and Revival celebration to be held on Sunday, Sept. 20. The Homecoming Revival will be held on Sept. 14-17 at 7 p.m. nightly. Rev. Dr. Staccato Powell, pastor of Grace A.M.E. Zion Church in Raleigh, will be the speaker for all four nights.

The Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church Women’s Day Committee is sponsoring a Hat Day in the J.L. Stowe Fellowship Hall on Saturday Sept. 12 from 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
The public is invited to attend and model or display their favorite hats. Prizes will be awarded for the best hat.
