LEXINGTON — East Rowan’s girls basketball team opened the season with a 52-41 win on Tuesday at Central Davidson.

“We only played well in spurts,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “We had to manage foul trouble,  and Central Davidson was a lot bigger and better than they were last year. We missed a lot of shots we really have to make, even if it’s a contested shot.”

East led 29-17 at halftime.

“We had a couple of chances to blow it open in the fourth quarter, had a little run to get it to 44-28, but then we had several bad possessions,” Holland said.

Grace Eagle led the Mustangs with 14 points. Adalie Harrison scored 11. Freshman Leah Hinceman had nine points and played well in her debut.

East was able to put the ball in the hands of senior point guard Harrison to finish things off.

“It’s a luxury to have that,” Holland said.

Salem Ward and Sidney Hatfield scored 16 each for the Spartans.

East hosts South Rowan on Friday. It will be the opener for the Raiders and new head coach Alex Allen.

Girls basketball

Kennedy Calhoun scored 20 points for Hickory Ridge in Tuesday’s 66-49 loss to Mallard Creek.

Catawba men win

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Catawba’s men’s basketball team outscored Augusta 94-82 on Tuesday.

Daquan Lilly shot 9-for-15 from the floor, scored 20 points and had seven rebounds for the Indians. Marcell Haskett made 14 free throws and scored 22 points. Devin Cooper had 14 points and six assists.

Also scoring in double figures were Terrence Whitfield (11), Larry McLeod (10) and Malik Constantine (10).

Catawba (3-1) made only eight turnovers.

Augusta fell to 2-2.

Davie boys

MILLERS CREEK — Davie’s boys opened with a 57-46 win at West Wilkes on Tuesday.

Davie lost a strong senior class and still has several players involved with football, but got a road win behind Luke Williams (14 points), Brooks Johnson (13) and freshman Iverson  King (12).

College football

Catawba cornerback Cris Page and linebacker Jeremiah Ferguson were named to the All-SAC second team on Tuesday.

Page becomes a rare four-time All-SAC selection, earning second team honors three times and first team accolades as a sophomore. He led the team with five interceptions and finished with 11 for his career. Page broke up  s 10 passes and had three stops for losses among his 54 tackles.

Ferguson collects All-SAC honors for the second straight year. He led the team  with 69 tackles. He had 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.

Mars Hill’s Craig Rucker  repeated as SAC Offensive Player of the Year, while Lenoir-Rhyne’s Jaquan Artis was named SAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Freshman of the Year honors went to Carson-Newman’s Troy Dendy on offense and Mars Hill’s Dexter Fitzpatrick on defense. Lenoir-Rhyne’s Jason Poe was named the Jacobs Blocking Trophy award winner. Lenoir-Rhyne’s Drew Cronic took home Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive year.

College soccer

   The Wingate Bulldogs, and the Queens Royals will represent the South Atlantic Conference in the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Super Region 2 Regional.

Basketball recruits

Moravian Prep’s Josh Hall, ranked 26th nationally by Rivals, committed to N.C. State.

His father, Quincy Hall, starred for West Rowan in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons and played at East Carolina.

HS boys soccer

Concord’s playoff run ended with Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Charlotte Catholic in a regional final.

Oak Grove (football, girls golf) and South Rowan (boys cross country and volleyball) have two championships each.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy varsity girls basketball team defeated Cannon School, 40-3, in their season opener.

Leading scorers  were Izzy Banish with 12 points, Lucy Barr with seven points, and Maggie Antosek with  five.

The next game is Monday at home against Summit.

Racing

Kannapolis native Daniel Hemric, 28, driver of the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, clinched Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series  Rookie of the Year honors with a 12th-place finish in Sunday’s Ford EcoBoost 400.

Mid. school hoops

North Rowan’s girls won 50-23 against Erwin.  Demya Phifer scored 17 points for North. Brittany Ellis had 14, and Bailee Goodlett had seven.

Kady Collins led Erwin with seven points. Allie Martin scored six, while Kori Miller had five.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Gary Schenk with a net of 61.98

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Carl Moore with a net of 69.92. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ben Moore with a net of 69.31. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Larry Perrell with a net of 67.44.

Schenk shot a 72 for low gross and Perrell won low net.
