CHINA GROVE — Colbie Perry made six 3-pointers, scored 20 points and had five steals to lead Carson’s girls to a 65-14 win against Concord in a basketball season opener on Thursday.

Maci Cooper made three 3-pointers and scored 13.

Carson made a dozen 3-pointers.

“Strong starts in the first and third quarter, and we got a lot of contributions from everyone who went on the floor,” Carson coach Brooke Stouder said. “Our pressure defense helped us early, and we rebounded well. That’s our main concern.”

Concord had only one offensive rebound in the second half.

Victoria Post had eight points and nine rebounds for Carson. Lani Isley had five steals. Taylor Conrad had seven rebounds. Carleigh Perry got in early foul trouble but had six points. Hannah Isley had eight points and five steals.

It was a running-clock game in the third quarter.

CHINA GROVE — EJ  Clark scored 29 points, but Carson’s boys fell to Concord 77-64 in a season opener on Thursday.

AJ Mauldin and Javon Smith scored 14 each for the Cougars.

Nigel Robinson and Johnakin Franklin led the Spiders with 14 each.

“It was a tough game,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “We had a bad second half defensively and turned it over too much. I really expected us to move the ball better and play better, but we didn’t move enough. We were pretty sloppy.”

RICHMOND, Va. — Livingstone fell to Virginia Union, 87-77, here Thursday night in CIAA men’s basketball action.

The game was tied at halftime, 31-31, but the Panthers (2-3, 1-0) shot better in the second half, outscoring the Blue Bears (3-2, 0-1) by 10, 56-46.

Senior guard Roger Ray led Livingstone with 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc. Forward Malik Smith scored 12 points and had a team-high nine rebounds.

Virginia Union held LC’s 6-9 Elmore twins, Lydell and Navar, to 8 and 5 points, respectively.

Terrell Leach paced the Panthers with 27 points, followed by Raemaad Wright’s double-double — 20 points and 10 boards.

In the women’s game, Virginia Union crushed Livingstone, 92-55.

After a close first quarter at 25-22, the defending CIAA champion Panthers owned the second quarter, 18-3, and continued the torrid rampage in the second half.

Junior guard Shareka McNeill scored 55 points for VUU (3-1), connecting on 18-of-31 shots, including 9-of-18 from 3-point land. She also made 10-of-15 free throws.

McNeill tied a CIAA Tournament record last March with 59 points — also against Livingstone.

LC (1-2) had four players in double figures — Daisa Harris (16), Adel Allen (12), Darra Walker (10) and Daijah Turner (10).

Livingstone’s teams will host Bowie State in a home-opening doubleheader on Monday, the women’s game set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.

Mid. school hoops

North Rowan’s girls won against Southeast, 56-10.

Bailee Goodlett and Demya Phifer scored 15 points each. Brittany Ellis added eight.

App State wins

BOONE (AP) — O’Showen Williams registered 19 points as Appalachian State beat Charlotte 64-55 on Thursday night.

Adrian Delph had 15 points for Appalachian State (4-3).

Jordan Shepherd scored a career-high 20 points for the 49ers (2-2).

Appalachian State matches up against East Tennessee State on the road on Tuesday. Charlotte takes on Georgia State on the road on Wednesday.

NBA

MILWAUKEE  — Giannis Antetokounmpo had his second triple-double of the season and the Milwaukee Bucks beat Carmelo Anthony and the short-handed Portland Trail Blazers 137-129 on Thursday night.

Antetokounmpo had 24 points, 19 rebounds and a career-high 15 assists to lead the Bucks to their sixth straight victory. Antetokounmpo, who also had a triple-double in the season opener, has 16 career triple-doubles. Milwaukee is 14-2 in those games.

Eric Bledsoe added 30 points and six assists in the Bucks’ highest-scoring game of the season.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga.   — Webb Simpson birdied seven of his last 10 holes at the Plantation Course on Thursday for a 7-under 65 and the first-round lead in the RSM Classic, the final PGA Tour event of the year.

The top-ranked player in the field at No. 12, Simpson is coming off a six-week break since tying for seventh in Las Vegas.

“I only have a week off before Tiger’s tournament and we leave from there for the Presidents Cup, so I’ve had my time off,” Simpson said. “I’ve been home a lot lately, so it’s nice to get back at it.”

He began the birdie run on the par-5 18th and played the front nine in 6-under 30 with birdies on Nos. 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9.

“I grew up going to the beach in Wilmington, so I just love any time I get close to the coast here or Hilton Head, I just love it. That combined with enjoying the golf courses, my family’s coming, so it’s a good week for me.”

Three players were 6 under. Cameron Tringale and Kyoung-Hoon Lee shot 64 on Sea Island’s Seaside Course, and Rhein Gibson had a 66 on the Plantation layout. The final two rounds will be played on the Seaside Course.

“I think you play what the course gives you and if you’re in position, you’ve got to take advantage of good drives and short putts into these holes,” Tringale said. “But if you’re not in play in the right place, it can be really brutal out here. “

Brendon Todd opened with his bid for third straight victory with a 66 on the Seaside Course. He’s coming off victories in the Bermuda Championship and Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Tournament host Davis Love III had a 68 on the Seaside Course.
