St. Augustine, FL — The strong season for the Catawba women’s soccer team has come to a close as the Indians lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to host Flagler 3-0 on Friday night. Catawba finishes with an 11-4-3 overall record.
The Saints came in undefeated at 19-0-1 on the season and winners of the Peach Belt Conference. Flagler started the scoring in this one just thirteen minutes into the match when Sara Sandberg scored her first of three goals on the night.
Sandberg would score goals two and three in the second half; the second goal came in the 61st minute while the third goal came in the 77th minute. Her goal total for the season now stands at 23.
It was a tough night for the Indians offense as well as they got off just 9 shots compared to the Saints’ 21. Both teams would have 5 corner kicks each while both goalies also had 7 saves each.
Although it was a tough end to a solid season, there were many bright spots along the way. Maddie Capel led the Indians this season with 5 goals followed by Courtney Reavis, Shelby Vasich, and Katie Beck who all had four goals each.
Shelby Thompson had a great senior season in goal for Catawba. Her record for the year is 8-4-3 while collecting 67 saves. Thompson also made the All-SAC second team.
Defender Katie Beck had the most accolades this year, making the All-SAC First Team, winning the SAC Defensive Player of the Year Award, and named First Team All-Southeast Region in her sophomore season. Shelby Vasich and Jovana Sanchez also made All-SAC teams this year.
