High school basketball: East boys get first win

GRANITE QUARRY — Gavin Sprinkle scored 20 points on Friday, all in the second half, and led East Rowan’s boys basketball team to a 69-58 win over South Rowan.
The Mustangs (1-1) withstood a 31-point outburst by South Rowan’s Braden Graham. Graham’s high last season was 15 points.
Graham also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Jake Hunter had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Mustangs. Freshman Dylan Valley came off the bench to stroke 3-pointers and scored 15. Cameron Padgett added 11.
“Valley gave us a huge lift,” winning coach Kurt Misenheimer said. “And (point guard) Landon Shuping did a little bit of everything. He was all over the place.”
East led 27-23 at halftime, but grabbed a double-digit lead in the third quarter.
The Mustangs made 13 3-pointers.
“We played great team basketball,” Misenheimer said. “We started slow, but in the second half we picked up the pace and got open shots.”
Braxton Stanley and Logan Carter added eight points each for the Raiders.
East takes on Central Cabarrus at home next Tuesday, while South Rowan (0-1) has a Central Carolina Conference game on Monday at East Davidson.
