SALISBURY — Catawba’s men’s basketbal team started sluggishly against Young Harris on Saturday at Goodman Gym.

With the Indians behind by seven points, Larry McLeod pounded down a dunk off a lob by Devin Cooper, and Cooper followed with a transition 3-pointer.  Those plays put the Indians (4-1) on the path to a 94-88 win against Young Harris (0-5).

Cooper scored 23 points to lead the Indians. He shot 9-for-10 at the foul line.Marcell Haskett made four 3-pointers and scored 18. He had seven assists.

Malik Constantine scored 16 on 6-for-8 shooting. Daquan Lilly had 13 points and eight boards. McLeod added 10 points.

Catawba was off from 3-point range, shooting 7-for-25, but did shoot 52.5 percent from the field.

Catawba led by as many as 18 points in the second half with under seven minue remaining, but had to hold off a late charge by Young Harris.

The Salisbury Academy jayvee boys basketbal team defeated  Forsyth Country Day, 44-9.

Leading scorers for the Jaguars were John McCoy with 19 points and Abdul Eliwa with 13.

Men’s basketball

Jamarius Hairston (Carson) made six 3-pointers and scored 30 points to lead the DCCC Storm to a 97-57 win against Southwest Virginia CC.

College volleyball

The Carson-Newman Eagles swept the Queens Royals to win the conference tournament championship on Saturday.

East girls win

GRANITE QUARRY — Sophomore Bethany Rymer scored a game-high 27 points for South Rowan’s girls basketball team on Friday, but East Rowan still handled the Raiders, 68-51.

It would be hard to be more balanced than East was. Five Mustangs scored in double figures, with Adalie Harrison (14), Caroline Houpe (13), Grace Eagle (12), Leah Hinceman (11) and Mary Spry all producing strong games. Tall freshman Haley Dalton almost made it six Mustangs in double digits. She scored eight.

“It was a solid team effort, and Adalie was great,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “Our three seniors (Harrison, Houpe and Eagle) set the pace. We are figuring out how to work in the others.”

It’s been 16 seasons (2003-04) since East  (2-0) put five girls in double figures on the same night.

East played its best in the second quarter when it turned a 20-13 lead into a 44-19 cushion.

“If we can play whole games the way we played the second quarter, then we’re on to something,” Holland said.

Rymer kept South (0-1) in the game for as long as she could in new coach Alex Allen’s debut. Rymer had a 22-point game last season as a varsity freshman.

South lost its all-time leading scorer, Janiya Downs, so it will need a lot from Rymer, who averaged almost 10 points last season.

“Rymer gave us all kinds of trouble,” Holland said. “And, as the game went on, her confidence rubbed off on the rest of her team.”

South  outscored East in the second half.

“We fouled too much and were thinking about the fouls more than on just playing good defense,” Holland said. “But we were better than we were in our first game. We’ll get back to work for Central Cabarrus (Tuesday).

Mackenzie Chabala, a freshman, scored nine for South Rowan.

South starts Central Carolina Conference play at East Davidson Monday.

East boys top SR

GRANITE QUARRY — Gavin Sprinkle scored 20 points on Friday, all in the second half, and led East Rowan’s boys basketball team to a 69-58 win over South Rowan.

The Mustangs (1-1) withstood a 31-point outburst by South Rowan’s Braden Graham. Graham’s high last season was 15 points.

Graham also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Jake Hunter had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Mustangs. Freshman Dylan Valley came off the bench to stroke 3-pointers and scored 15. Cameron Padgett added 11.

“Valley gave us a huge lift,” winning coach Kurt Misenheimer said. “And (point guard) Landon Shuping did a little bit of everything. He was all over the place.”

East led 27-23 at halftime, but grabbed a double-digit lead in the third quarter.

The Mustangs made 13 3-pointers.

“We played great team basketball,” Misenheimer said. “We started slow, but in the second half we picked up the pace and got open shots.”

Braxton Stanley and Logan Carter added eight points each for the Raiders.

East takes on Central Cabarrus at home next Tuesday, while South Rowan (0-1) has a Central Carolina Conference game on Monday at East Davidson.

HS girls wrestling

Salisbury has started the school’s first girls wrestling team.  Kalijah Moody recorded a pin in 45 seconds to get the first win in the sport in school history

Women’s basketball

Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had 15 points and seven rebounds as UNC Pembroke beat St. Augustine’s 63-58 on Saturday.

Methodist’s Tyzarea Alexander (Salisbury) had team highs of 14 points and six rebounds in a loss to Piedmont International on Saturday.

Junior A’Mya McClain scored  25 points as the Pfeiffer University women’s basketball team broke a four-game skid with a 60-50 win over Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Merner Gym.

Franklin Academy stormed from behind, scoring the final three goals to defeat Christ the King 3-2 and win the 1A state championship.
