East girls strong
GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s girls rolled against Central Cabarrus on Tuesday in a non-conference game.
“I thought it was going to be a grinder,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “But we jumped out early and set the tone. It probably helped us that it was Central’s first game.”
East won with unexpected ease, 63-30. Central (0-1) is expected to be very good with its top three players returning from a 17-9 team that went 10-0 in the South Piedmont Conference.
“It was a great team effort,” Holland said. “We came out and knocked down a couple of shots and that gave us a lot of confidence.”
The Mustangs (3-0) got double-doubles from Mary Spry (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Adalie Harrison (18 points, 10 rebounds).
“Adalie controlled the game and did a great job of defending a point guard who lit us up last year,” Holland said. “Adalie was determined not to let that happen again. And Mary had a great game in the post. She played strong and aggressive all the way through.”
Harrison had four assists. Leah Hinceman pulled down 11 rebounds, while Grace Eagle scored an efficient 10 points. Everyone played defense.
“Our defense was the best it’s been this year,” Holland said. “Central is always good and Coach (Brandon) Blalock always does a great job. This was just a night when we put together four good quarters.”

E. ROWAN (63) —Spry 20, Harrison 18, Eagle 10, Hinceman 6, Honeycutt 4, Houpe 2, McPherson 2, L.Miller 1, Dalton, Ali, Nwafor, Jones.
