RALEIGH ó The N.C. Council for Women/Domestic Violence Commission (CFW/DVC) joins Gov. Bev Perdue in encouraging all North Carolina citizens to recognize the significant contributions of women to the America political process.
The governor has proclaimed Wednesday as Women’s Equality Day in North Carolina. The event marks the day in 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote.
The process began in 1869, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony formed the National Woman Suffrage Association. The U.S. Congress declared Aug. 26 as Women’s Equality Day in 1971.
“Last fall, North Carolina citizens demonstrated their confidence in female leadership by electing a woman governor and female majority to the Council of State,” said CFW/DVC Director Mel Chilton.
“Our goal is to help empower women to have a voice in the political process, and to encourage more women to seek leadership opportunities of all sorts.”
