Research paper
Frankie Lyons, head of the radiography program at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, recently presented a research paper at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Conference in San Diego, Calif.
Lyons co-presented the paper: “Workforce Development: The Community and Technical College Faculty Perceptions of the Open Door Policy,” with James E. Bartlett III, a professor at N.C. State University. Lyons is completing doctoral studies in adult and community college education at N.C. State.
Lyons and Bartlett’s paper looks at the open door policy of community colleges in both theory and practice through the eyes of faculty members. The research was guided by the following questions: Does the modern community college remain true to the original intent of open door policy? Who, if anyone, is excluded by the implementation of open-door admissions? Given current enrollment pressures, budget constraints, and the “graying” of the community college workforce, the research offers a candid look at community college admissions from a variety of faculty perspectives.
Lyons began teaching at RCCC in 1996. She earned a bachelor’s degree in radiological science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She holds a master’s degree in health administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
