MOUNT PLEASANT —   Macari Allison hit a flurry of 3-pointers in the third quarter as West Rowan’s boys basketball team broke  open a tough game with Mount Pleasant and went on to a 78-58 non-conference victory on Tuesday.

Allison scored 22 to lead the Falcons (3-1), who got 19 points from Jalen Moss and 15 from Ty’Kese Warren.

Hunter Sloop scored 15 to lead the Tigers. Jamal Williams had 14.

South boys win

WINSTON-SALEM — South Rowan’s boys basketball team got 33 points from junior Braden Graham and won 70-59 at Oak Grove on Tuesday in a Central Carolina Conference game.

It was the first victory  of the season for the Raiders (1-4, 1-3).

Graham went 10-for-12 at the foul line and made three 3-pointers.

Brenden Finger had a big fourth quarter and scored 16 points.

Ethan Whitaker scored 24 for the Grizzlies.

Carson boys fall

CHINA GROVE — Kheni Briggs scored 19 points as A.L. Brown won at Carson on Tuesday, 76-59.

The Wonders improved to 5-0.

EJ Clark stayed hot for the Cougars (3-4) with 24 points.  Javon Smith scored 15, and AJ Mauldin had 12.

Carson led 29-28 at the break, but the Wonders picked up the pace in the second half.

“We did a lot of good things, but we missed some free throws and had a couple of defensive breakdowns at the end of the third and start of the fourth,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “That’s when they got some separation.”

Amari Grier added 14 for the Wonders.

North boys win

SPENCER — Zero made 3-pointers and shaky foul shooting (11-for-25), but North Rowan’s boys battled for a 59-52 Yadkin Valley Conference win against South Stanly on Tuesday.

North (2-1, 2-0) did manage to shoot a respectable 44 percent from the field and got 16 points from Zay Davis and 13 from Brandon White.

South Stanly also had  its share of struggles from the foul line. Justin Gaddy led the Bulls with 20 points.

Salisbury boys win

SALISBURY — Zay Kesler scored 16 points, Joe Witherspoon had 15, and Jacquez Smith had 11, including some clutch ones in the fourth quarter, as short-handed Salisbury beat Central Davidson, 57-51, on Tuesday.

Hickory Ridge girls

Kennedy Calhoun scored 19 points and had seven steals to lead Hickory Ridge to a 73-32 win against Concord on Tuesday.

N. Davidson girls

Courtney McMillan had a double-double and Emily Hege scored 19 points to lead North Davidson to a 56-40 CCC win against West Davidson on Tuesday.

N. Davidson boys

Jamarien Dalton scored 26 points to lead North Davidson to a 58-48 CCC win against West Davidson on Tuesday.

Jason Hamlin scored 16 for the Green Dragons.

E. Forsyth boys

East Forsyth’s boys lost 79-56 to Forbush on Tuesday despite 20 points by Brion Jones.

Caleb Boles had 19 for Forbush.

  

Central girls

Aniyah Tate led Central Cabarrus with 16 points in  a 51-42 loss to Berry on Tuesday. Ja’el Miller scored 11.

Jayvee girls

Makayla Johnson scored 11 points and Alaiyah  White had 10 as Carson’s girls romped against A.l. Brown on Tuesday, 42-6.

Defensive standouts for Carson were Camden Corley and Abbey Nixon.

West Rowan’s girls cruised against Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, 44-9.

Karsen Simpson scored 14 for the Falcons. Brooke Kennerly and Shykira Wiggins had 11 each.

Salisbury’s girls won against Central Davidson on Tuesday, 50-24.

Dondrea Carmichael scored 15 points. Sutton Webb had eight, Pink Corpening scored six, and Sydney Hlavacek had five.

Jayvee boys

Noah Loeblein scored 14 points and Jason Artis had 10 to lead West Rowan to a 42-32 win against Mount Pleasant on Tuesday.

College track

WINSTON-SALEM — Catawba opened its indoor track and field season on Sunday at the JDL Early Bird Invitational at the JDL Fast Track. The Catawba Indians set 14 school records in the year’s first meet.

Nearly every field record fell at the meet. MeKayla White broke her own marks in both the long jump (5.77m) and the triple jump (11.59m), while Candace Swepson broke her own marks in the shot put (11.49m) and the weight thrown (14.45m). Freshman Lyndon Strickland took down the men’s marks in the shot put (12.74m) and weight throw (12.81m). Two other men’s freshman notched field marks as Jesse Schronce went 1.85m in the high jump and Carlos Horcacitas-Martin equaled the record of 13.70m in the triple jump.

On the track, Kierra McNeill set a 60m record (7.69) with freshman Trinity Gatewood setting a new standard in the 60m (9.24). Freshman Samantha Payne topped the 400m mark (58.57) and twin sister Skylar set a 500m record (1:23.53). Jaylen Hall set a men’s 500m record (1:10.26). The final record was set by the women’s 4×400 relay team of Kierra Jones, the Payne sisters and Gianna Gutierrez-Principe at 4:16.11.

Catawba will compete at Liberty on  Jan. 24-25 in Lynchburg, Va.
