West Rowan girls

MOORESVILLE — West Rowan got off to a slow start against winless Pine Lake Prep (0-6) on Friday.

But the Falcons (6-0) got rolling in the second quarter and rode 38 points by Abigail Wilson to a 70-37 victory.

It was the second-biggest scoring game of UNC Asheville signee Wilson’s career. Her career high is 39.

Whitley Arnott tied her career high with 13 points. Cindy Connolly scored eight.

Carson girls

CHINA GROVE — Carson was in a battle on Friday.

After struggling late in the first half and in the third quarter to lose an 11-point lead, the Cougars trailed Central Cabarrus,  36-33, going to the fourth.

But that’s when Carson took over. Carson outscored Central 19-5 over the last eight minutes to win 52-41.

A lot of teams have played a lot of basketball in the last two weeks. Carson was playing for the fifth time in eight days.

“Good start, bad middle, great finish,” said Carson coach Brooke Stouder. “We just couldn’t hit a shot for a long time, but we rebounded well, we played good defense, and we were strong at the end and made free throws. We stayed with it when things weren’t going well and we found a way to win.”

Carleigh Perry led the Cougars (8-1) with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Ellie Wilhelm had 10 points and three steals. Colbie Perry had nine points and five rebounds. Lani Isley had seven points and four steals. Taylor Conrad had seven rebounds.

Only three players scored for the Vikings (3-4). Ja’el Miller led the way with 18 points. Demi Case had 15.

The win was the 199th for Stouder, who moved into second place all-time among Rowan County girls basketball coaches. She passed former North Rowan coach Gary Atwell. Former East Rowan coach Jesse Watson’s record of 324 wins will be safe for a while.

“Central does a great job of speeding you up, of making you uncomfortable,  and they’re good on defense,” Stouder said. “But we responded. It’s a good win.”

East Rowan girls

MOCKSVILLE — East Rowan’s depth, balance and experienced proved too much for a very young Davie County squad on Friday.

“Davie made us work, but our size and experience made the difference,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “They play a lot of freshmen, but they out-worked us for a while. We didn’t have a lot of intensity at the start.”

In the driver’s seat for the No. 1 seed for the Christmas tournament, East (9-0) breezed to a 66-25 victory over the War Eagles (0-7).

Haley Dalton led the Mustangs with 13 points, Mary Spry had 12, Leah Hinceman scored 10, and Adalie Harrison scored nine.

“We’ve played six games in two weeks and a lot of people are battling sickness, bumps and bruises,” Holland said. “Leah (Hinceman) did a great job of bringing the energy and the effort that got us going.”

Seven players scored at least six for East, and that has been a familiar winning formula for the Mustangs to this point.

Olivia Tatum led Davie with 11 points.

South Rowan girls

TYRO — Haley Lowe’s 30-point outburst led West Davidson to a 52-29 Central Carolina Conference win against visiting South Rowan on Friday.

It was a season high for Lowe, a 5-foot-11 senior who averages 18 points. She had 12 rebounds for the Green Dragons (3-4, 2-2).

South trailed 27-15 at halftime, and a three-point third quarter ended any hope of a comeback by the Raiders (1-6, 1-4).

Bethany Rymer scored 13 for the Raiders. Madison McGuire had seven.

North Rowan girls

SPENCER — North Rowan’s girls handled one of the tougher teams in the Yadkin Valley Conference on Friday and took a 50-42 win against visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy (5-2, 1-1).

“We came out and jumped on them pretty good,” North coach Lamar Wilkerson said. “Then we got into some foul trouble, that set us back some, and they made a good comeback. They’ve got a well-coached team.”

North (5-1, 3-0) got a big game from sophomore Hannah Wilkerson, who had  20 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

“We played her down low a lot and Hannah gave us a lot of second-chance points,” Coach Wilkerson said.

Natavia Taborn scored 13 points. Makiya McDaniel continued her steady play with eight points and six boards.

WINSTON-SALEM — Salisbury’s girls (6-0, 5-0) won at Oak Grove (5-2, 2-2) on Friday, 53-42, to stay perfect on the season and in the Central Carolina Conference.

Varsity girls

• Amarah Owens scored 14 points to lead Lexington to a 44-32 Central Carolina Conference against East Davidson.

• A 33-point effort by sophomore Emily Hege led North Davidson to a 52-50 CCC win against Thomasville. Shakira Little scored 17 for the Bulldogs.

Jayvee girls

Carson romped to a 45-12 win against East Rowan on Friday.

Makayla Johnson scored 14, Alaiyah White had 13, and Camden Corley scored 11 for Carson. Abbey Nixon and Allie Burns stood out on defense. Mac Misenheimer had four points for the Mustangs.
