The city of Kannapolis reported an untreated wastewater spill to surface waters Tuesday, but officials said there appears to be no significant environmental consequence.
The spill occurred due to a grease buildup in the sewer system, resulting in a manhole overflowing within the Concord Lake Basin.
Officials estimate the spill amount could have been as much as 6,000 gallons.
All repairs have been completed. No evidence of environmental damage was found, but inspection and testing will continue in order to confirm a finding that the spill had no significant impact on surface water.
Municipalities are required to report such spills under North Carolina law.
