With only 16 days to go until the 2009 Rowan County Relay for Life event, several teams have scheduled a variety of events including a bone marrow drive and various fundraisers for cancer programs and research.
– On Saturday, April 18, the Faith Elementary School Firecrackers Relay Team ó made up of students and staff ó hopes to create some hope for cancer patient Carl Doby, husband of teacher Deona Doby, with a bone marrow drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Being typed to be a bone marrow donor only requires a swab of the cheek and may end up saving a life as the donor becomes part of the National Bone Marrow Registry, now known as Be The Match. There is no cost for donors, but to support expenses for this and other drives for Carl and other patients, the team will also hold a bake sale.
To contribute baked goods, bring single-wrapped servings to the school on the morning of the drive or during the prior week. For more information, contact Debbie Beck at 704-640-0767 or beckdj@rss.k12.nc.us. Proceeds will benefit expenses and future drives for Carl Doby.
