The county’s reconstituted Rowan County Zoning Board of Adjustments will hear an appeal on a broadcast tower May 19.
Initially, the hearing had been set for May 12 but was rescheduled.
Richard L. Parker, a Mount Ulla farmer, is appealing the county’s refusal to issue a zoning permit for a radio broadcast tower.
On Jan. 29, Parker and his wife, Dorcas, filed an application for a building permit for a 1,200-foot broadcast tower off Parker Loop Road in Mount Ulla.
The county rejected the permit application, citing failure to provide engineering plans, provide required fees and include a zoning permit.
Subsequently, an attorney representing Parker responded that a zoning permit was unnecessary since the Parkers planned to install an antenna to provide emergency communication for the county.
Planning Director Ed Muire responded that even if the antenna is exempt, the exemption did not include the tower.
The Zoning Board, which hadn’t met in a couple of years, held a training and organization session last month. The board has several new members.
The members selected Jeff Morris, a Salisbury attorney and Spencer alderman, as chairman.
The board selected Gwen Graham as vice chairman.
The tower hearing will be May 19 at 7 p.m. in the Cohen Administrative Office Building, 130 W. Innes St.
