PINEHURST — Salisbury’s Michael Childress is tied for fifth place after the first day of the 11th Carolinas Young Amateur Championship. Childress shot a 1-over par 73 during Monday’s first round at Pinewild Country Club.

Childress, a sophomore at the University of Richmond, had two birdies and three bogeys on Monday and trails co-leaders Caleb Proveaux (69, Lexington, S.C.) and Fulton Smith (69, Pinehurst) by four strokes. Proveaux is a senior at South Carolina while Smith is a freshman at Wake Forest.

The tournament, featuring 66 golfers between the ages of 18 and 25, who have finished high school and have current USGA handicap indexes at a CGA club, concludes today.

HS boys basketball

Lexington edged North Davidson, 68-64, in a battle of Central Carolina Conference contenders on Monday.

Alex Holt led the Yellow Jackets (7-3, 5-1) with 21 points. Jamarien Dalton scored 26 for the Black Knights (6-4, 4-2).

Lexington holds a one-game lead on North Davidson, Thomasville, Salisbury and Central Davidson.

HS boys wrestling

Salisbury’s Michael Lowry got his 100th career win in the Hornets’ recent 45-30 CCC victory against West Davidson. Also winning for the Hornets  (7-1, 2-0) were Christian Sierra, Javon White, Lloyd Hilton, Trey Wilhoit, Jayden Gibson, Camron Simpson and Marcus Cook.

Salisbury hosts Central Davidson on Thursday.

HS girls wrestling

Salisbury’s Kalijah Moody and McKiara Worth    had second places in the   Elizabeth Berry Memorial Tournament at Mallard Creek.
