Education briefs: West Rowan High gets grant for technology

West Rowan High School has received $7,500 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation. The school will use the gift to increase technology in the Freshman Academy, specifically to add Promethean Boards (Smart Boards) to classrooms.
“This is a great thing, especially during these difficult economic times,” said Nelson Cowden, assistant principal over freshmen. “We started adding Promethean Boards to some of our Freshman Academy rooms, but could not complete the project. Now we will be able to complete our initial technology goals in the Freshman Academy.”
The school’s goal with the Freshman Academy has been to make the transition from middle school to high school as successful and stress-free as possible.
School officials say they have seen a dramatic decrease in behavioral problems that normally plague freshmen. Another goal was to offer more technology for freshmen and freshmen teachers.
Established in 2001, the Food Lion Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to improving the communities in which Food Lion operates.
The foundation places an emphasis on the support of primary and secondary education, feeding the hungry, and organizations that enhance the quality of life in Food Lion’s local communities.
