A.L. Brown High School has won the second annual aluminum cans collection competition, sponsored by the Kannapolis Environmental Stewardship Commission.
The contest is held between A.L. Brown and Northwest Cabarrus High School and is held in observance of Earth Day.
A.L. Brown collected 402 pounds of cans, equaling $120.60. Northwest collected 107 pounds, equaling $32.10. All of the money has been donated to the Firefighters’ Burned Children Fund.
“This was a fantastic way to foster the act of ‘thinking green’ among our community’s youth while supporting a very worthwhile cause at the same time,” said city of Kannapolis Community Outreach Coordinator Renee Goodnight. “We hope to collect even more cans next year and continue to grow this contest.”
Kannapolis Fire Department retrieved the wagons filled with the collected cans and measured the official weights.

Cabarrus college
Cabarrus College of Health Sciences is offering general education courses over the summer semesters to help students get a jump start on the fall semester or students who are unable to take courses at their home institution.
Courses offered include: accounting and healthcare finance, anatomy and physiology I & II, chemistry (high school equivalent), ethics in healthcare, English composition I, microbiology, nutrition, general psychology, introduction to sociology and statistics.
The first summer session starts May 14 and ends June 26. The second summer session begins June 25 and ends August 7.

Pre-nursing
The college is now offering a pre-nursing track in the associate in science program. A student is guaranteed admission to the associate degree in nursing program when the pre-nursing track is completed successfully.
The pre-nursing track has the same admissions requirements as the associate degree nursing program and consists of 28 semester hours of credit that can be completed over two semesters.
Three courses must be completed with a grade of B or higher at Cabarrus College: (BIO 100 ń medical terminology; BIO 210-human anatomy and physiology; and BIO 220 ń human anatomy and physiology II).
The remaining courses can be completed at the college or transferred from another institution. A cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher must be achieved for all courses completed at Cabarrus College.
