Seen the latest Star Wars movie? Come see the real thing as we look through the James Webb telescope towards the beginning of time to see how galaxies are formed, at the English Speaking Union dinner meeting at the Salisbury Country Club on Thursday, Jan. 23.
Guide for the journey is Dr. Jon Gardner, Deputy Senior Project Scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt Maryland.
Gardner watches over the development of the James Webb telescope, which launches this year and takes up where the Hubble telescope leaves off.
Gardner will talk about how galaxies formed as small clumps of stars early in the history of the universe and evolved into the big, bright galaxies we see today.
He works with scientists who study the universe as a whole, through observations of the cosmic microwave background as well as observation of galaxies. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at Harvard, followed by Master’s and PhD in Astronomy at the University of Hawaii.
Cocktails are at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7, and presentation at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $32. Come as a one-time guest to experience the caliber of our programs and consider joining our organization.
