Research is a critical Veterans Affairs mission that benefits veterans and the entire nation through scientific investigation. Researchers played key roles in developing devices and techniques that revolutionized health care such as the cardiac pacemaker, the CAT scan and liver and kidney transplants.
Today, Veterans Affairs is a leader in many areas of research, including AIDS, mental health, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, infectious diseases and spinal cord injury. Staff conduct biomedical, rehabilitation, clinical and health services research ó as well as large, multi-center clinical trials ó at more than 100 medical centers across the country.
