NORTH

DENTON — North Rowan survived a scare at South Davidson to stay unbeaten in the Yadkin Valley Conference.

The Cavaliers won 63-59 behind a career-high 25 points from Kendrell Goodes, who also had nine rebounds.

South Davidson (1-11,1-5) got a huge game from sophomore Thomas Ellington. He came into the game averaging 15.6 per game and tossed in 29, with four 3-pointers.

Another factor in the tight game was a “zero” in the scorebook from North’s 6-foot-10 sophomore Brandon White, who was coming off a triple-double outing. White was assessed a technical foul about 90 seconds into the contest, and coach Jason Causby elected to sit him out the rest of the way.

“Kendrell  is playing his best ball of the season right now,” Causby said. “He picked up the slack in Brandon’s absence.”

Goodes, North’s only returning starter from last season’s team that reached the 1A state semifinals,  had scored in double figures only once this season before Friday’s contest.

North also got big contributions from James Gladden, who scored a season-high 11. Malcolm Wilson contributed four steals.

SALISBURY/SOUTH

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s boys had little difficulty with South Rowan on Friday and registered a Central Carolina Conference win.

Ten Hornets scored in a 57-35 victory.

Salisbury (8-4, 6-3) built a 31-15 halftime lead.

Cameron Stout made three 3-pointers and scored 13 for the Hornets. Zay Kesler scored 11.

Salisbury held South’s Braden Graham to 11 points.  Graham came into the game averaging 19.6, including a 32-point outburst against West Rowan on Wednesday.

Defensively, Salisbury matched its season low for points allowed. The Hornets also allowed 35 to East Rowan in the Christmas tournament semifinals.

Salisbury plays North Rowan tonight at Catawba.

In Central Piedmont Conference action, 13 points by Iverson King and 11 by Zaharee Maddox lifted Davie (10-4, 1-1) to a 47-36 win against West Forsyth.

Concord (7-7, 1-0) upset A.L. Brown, 55-54, at Bullock Gym in South Piedmont Conference basketball.

After Concord missed a free throw, Kheni Briggs had a good look at a game-winner at the buzzer, but his shot rimmed out.

A.L. Brown (11-3, 1-1) led 52-50 with 4:26 remaining, but scored only three the rest of the way.

Mi’Keim Moore got the Wonders off to a fast start, but the Spiders got back even by halftime.
