RALEIGH — Livingstone’s women’s basketball team shot 50 percent in the second half and rallied to beat St. Augustine’s on Monday night, 71-63.

Daisa Harris scored 29 for the Blue Bears with some solid shooting – 10-for-20 from the field and 8-for-10 at the foul line.

Darra Walker came through with 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting.

Livingstone (6-8, 3-4) dug a hole with a five-point second quarter, but roared back in the second half to beat the Falcons (5-10, 1-5).

RALEIGH — Livingstone’s men’s basketball team shot terrific percentages on Monday and outscored St. Augustine’s, 90-86, in CIAA action.

Livingstone shot 66 percent for the game and almost 77 percent in the second half. The Blue Bears scored 60 in the second half.

Roger Ray played all 40 minutes and poured in 37 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Ray shot 11-for-19 from the floor and 12-for-15 from the foul line. He made three 3-pointers.

Lydell Elmore pitched in with 14 points and eight boards for the Blue Bears (10-6, 5-2).

Karaan Clemonts scored 26 for the Falcons.

NSMA

WINSTON-SALEM— Dan Patrick, Tom Verducci, and Michael Wilbon have been voted into the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame, NSMA executive director Dave Goren announced.

Three deceased legends, Skip Caray, Cawood Ledford, and Dick Young will also enter the Hall, the results of the annual vote of the NSMA’s membership.

The NSMA will also honor the 2019 national sportscaster of the year, Kevin Harlan, 2019 national sportswriter of the year, Adrian Wojnarowski, and 110 state sportscasters and sportswriters of the year from 49 states, plus the District of Columbia.

They will be honored at the 61st annual NSMA awards banquet on June 29 in Winston-Salem.

Cannon Ballers

  Former MLB catcher Guillermo Quiroz was named as the manager of the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers on Monday.

Quiroz spent parts of 10 seasons in the big leagues, with stints with  Toronto (2004-05), Seattle (2006, 2009-10), Texas (2007), Baltimore (2008), Boston (2012), and San Francisco (2013-14). He was part of the World Series champs in 2014.

  The Chicago White Sox farm team also will also call on returners José Bautista (pitching coach), Cole Armstrong (hitting coach), and Joe Geck (trainer), along with newcomers, Patrick Leyland (coach), and Kevin Childs (performance coach).

Quiroz, 38, comes to Kannapolis after making his way around the White Sox coaching tree that consumes the Tar Heel state, with his first stop coming in Winston-Salem (Class A Advanced) as a coach in 2018, and most recently as the hitting coach with the Charlotte Knights (Class AAA) in 2019.

HS basketball

While Salisbury and South Rowan have reached the halfway point in their grueling 18-game Central Carolina Conference schedule, North Piedmont Conference teams will finally get down to the serious stuff tonight.

The marquee matchup is  the girls game between East Rowan and West Rowan in Mount Ulla.

The pre-conference results indicate a three-way race for the NPC title is likely between West, East and Carson, and the first   confrontation is tonight.

West (12-0) and East (12-2) didn’t meet in the Christmas tournament. Carson knocked out East in the semifinals, and then West beat Carson in the championship game.

• Carson (12-2) starts NPC play tonight at home against North Iredell.

NPC boys

West Rowan (6-5) and Carson (7-7) are potential challengers to favorite Statesville as the NPC boys      play the first of their 10 league games tonight.

West will be taking on an upset-minded East Rowan team (2-12) that is capable  of challenging the Falcons.

Carson is taking on a North Iredell team (5-9) that is touted as the league’s most improved squad.

Salisbury boys

Salisbury’s boys are participating in Saturday’s   MLK High School Tourney Town Showcase at Greensboro’s Ben L Smith High.

Greensboro, NC – BigShots.net will present The MLK High School Tourney Town.

Salisbury (9-4) is taking on Reidsville (7-2) at 5 p.m.

Tickets for this event are $10, which includes all 7 games. The first game starts at 11 a.m.

Women’s basketball

McKenzie Gadson (Carson) had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists for Anderson in Saturday’s 97-67 win against Mars Hill.

Anderson stayed tied for first in the South Atlantic Conference with Catawba.

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart’s basketball team lost to Our Lady of Grace School of Greensboro.

Sacred Heart’s boys lost, 57-38.  Nick Loeblein scored 20 points.  Kaiden Dulkoski and Soyer Cornelison had eight rebounds each.

• Sacred Heart’s girls lost to Our Lady of Mercy, 38-23,  Lauren Childress had 13 points, and Angie Landaverde had five.

  Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys won, 33-23, against Our Lady of  Grace.  Will Walters led the way with 17 points. Kevin Bonilla scored 10.

• Sacred Heart’s jayvee girls won, 37-24.

Paloma Sifuentes scored 12 points.  Jiselle Garcia scored 11, and Jasmine Garcia had nine.

Pfeiffer basketball

Pfeiffer University junior men’s basketball player Jamaal David has been tabbed the USA South Player of the Week the league has announced.

David averaged 26.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in two games.

Erwin girls

Erwin’s girls lost to Mooresville, 37-19.

Riley Alexander scored  13 points, and Elizabeth Amstutz had 12 for Mooresville.

Morgan Tomlinson led Erwin with seven points.
