College women’s basketball: Catawba stays tied for first in SAC

CHARLOTTE — Catawba’s women’s basketball team stayed tied for first place in the South Atlantic Conference on Wednesday with a 70-57 road win at Queens.
Taisha DeShazo broke out of a shooting slump with three 3-pointers and 16 points to lead the 13th-ranked Indians (13-1, 8-1), who stayed tied for first with Anderson.
Post players Talia Barnes and Sara McIntosh combined for 21 points for Catawba. Madi Hallman made three 3-pointers.
Shemya Stanback didn’t have a good shooting night, but had team highs of seven rebounds, five steals and two assists.
Catawba trailed early, 10-7, but a layup by McIntosh triggered a 13-0 run for a double-digit lead. Janiya Downs capped that run with a three-point play.
Catawba led 35-31 at halftime.
Keyotta Garris made a layup to give the Indians a 60-51 lead after three quarters.
Catawba held Queens scoreless the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and was able to pull away. A 3-pointer by DeShazo gave the Indians a 14-point lead with 5:24 remaining.
Catawba shot 37.7 percent and was 6-for-21 on 3-pointers. The Indians went 18-for-25 at the foul line and forced 27 turnovers.
Julia Raflund led the Royals (3-12, 2-7) with 17 points.
Catawba is home against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday at 2 p.m.
