A child who fell into a deep fryer Saturday evening was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The mishap occurred around 7:30 p.m. at 6006 Sapp Road, a short distance south of the Rowan-Cabarrus county line.
Bostian Heights firefighters assisted Cabarrus County’s Rimer Fire Department with setting up a landing zone for a medical helicopter.
Mike Zimmerman, chief of the Bostian Heights department, said the child was conscious.
“We didn’t hear a peep,” he said.
He said the child was wrapped so extensively, it was impossible to tell sex or age.
“They had a grease fire … a turkey fryer or deep fryer used outside,” Zimmerman said. “Somehow the youngster fell into it … fell backwards … sat in it.”
Bostian Heights firefighters set up the landing zone on Sapp Road near where the accident occurred.
Zimmerman said Cabarrus EMS rolled the stretcher out of the driveway and loaded the child onto the helicopter.
The CMC helicopter was one of three flying into or adjacent to Rowan County between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Sunday night.
Another CMC helicopter picked up a biker injured in a wreck on Miller Road.
A Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center helicopter picked up a man injured in a wreck at Millbridge Speedway.
