GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s girls basketball team wasn’t razor-sharp on Tuesday but did enough to win vs. South Iredell, 68-51.
“We started slow and didn’t play very well most of the game,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “We did play better in the second quarter and were good on offense in the third quarter. Adalie (Harrison) was pushing the ball and we were running with her.”
Mary Spry scored a career-high 23 to lead the Mustangs (14-3, 2-1 North Piedmont Conference). Spry had 14 in the third quarter. Haley Dalton scored 12 despite foul trouble, Leah Hinceman scored 11, and Harrison had 10.
“We had some chances to break it open, but they kept fighting back,” Holland said. “They’re an improved team, so this was a good win for us.”
Hinceman held South Iredell’s Sarah Nelson to seven points, but East’s defense overall wasn’t as stout as it sometimes is.
“Our defense has been strong this year, but we had a lot of breakdowns,” Holland said. “We’re fouling way too much. They got 20 points at the foul line.”
