High school basketball: More girls games on Friday

SALISBURY — The defense of the Salisbury girls was stifling again on Friday.
Ranked No.1 in 2A by MaxPreps, the Hornets slowed down Lexington’s high-scoring Amarah Owens and blasted the Yellow Jackets, 58-20.
Salisbury jumped ahead 24-5 in the first quarter and stayed unbeaten in the Central Carolina Conference. The Hornets were able to rest their starters in the fourth quarter.
“I was proud of how we moved the ball on offense and we played great team defense,” Salisbury coach Lakai Brice said.
The Hornets (16-1, 12-0) got 16 points from Kyla Bryant, 12 from Jaleiah Gibson, 10 from Anayia Fulson and nine from Rachel McCullough.
In the CCC race, Salisbury leads North Davidson and Ledford by two games.

STATESVILLE — With the assistance of West Rowan’s double-overtime win at Carson, East Rowan moved into a tie for first place in the North Piedmont Conference by winning 55-30 at Statesville.
“We struggled early and just didn’t seen to have a lot of intensity,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “But we got 3s from Adalie Harrison, Caroline Houpe and Grace Eagle in the second quarter to break it open.”
Mary Spry led the Mustangs (15-3, 3-1) with 16 points. Harrison scored 15, while Houpe, who committed to D-II Concord (West Virginia) earlier this week, had 11.

“Mary had another strong game and we had a really good inside-out game going,” Holland said. “I wish we’d had more intensity, but it was a good win.”

WELCOME — South Rowan’s girls started slowly, but finished strong in a 56-46 Central Carolina Conference loss at North Davidson on Friday.
“It was our best team game of the season,” South coach Alex Allen said.

Sophomore guard Emily Hege was fantastic for the Black Knights (14-4, 10-2). She had 40 points, nine rebounds and five steals. She surpassed 1,000 career points.
Brittany Rymer and Madilyn Cherry scored 14 each for the Raiders, and Mackenzie Chabala had 12.

ASHEBORO — North Rowan lost 56-50 to Uwharrie Charter on Friday.
The Cavaliers (12-6, 8-2) are still in second place, but third-place Uwharrie (10-6, 6-3) moved closer.
Hannah Wilkerson had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Cavaliers.
Natavia Taborn had 10 points and four steals. Kamora Cannie had nine points and six assists. Makiya McDaniel scored eight.
Leading scorers for the Eagles were Natalie Beeson with 18, Kristen Jensen with 14, Gabi Greene with 13, and Mia Leonard with 11.

In a girls showdown in the South Piedmont Conference, Central Cabarrus won against Cox Mill in overtime, 57-56.
Aniyah Tate (13), Ja’el Miller (12), Mariah Barrie (12) and Imari Knight (12) scored in double figures for Central (13-5, 4-0).
Nya Tillery scored 17 for the Chargers (10-8, 3-1). Leah Hines had 15.

Jaliyah Simmons scored 17 and Jaliah Smoutherson had 16 as A.L. Brown’s girls beat Robinson 54-47 on Friday for a South Piedmont Conference win.
The Wonders (6-11, 2-2) got eight points from Jala Campbell.

In a jayvee game on Friday, Carson’s girls won against West Rowan, 34-14.
Makayla Johnson scored eight for the Cougars, while Camden Corley had seven. Kaalyn Wynn and Allie Burns scored six each. Riley Isley and Abbey Nixon were defensive standouts.
Jenna Wheeler led the Falcons with seven points.
